wuftpd 2.6.1 not working

Hi All!

Please can you help: I´ve gota server running hp-ux 11.31 in which I unable to ftp to/from any onther server or even my pc.
I´ve check /etc/intetd.conf and added -a on the ftp line, even download and install wuftpd, still not working, check /etc/services for port 21 and its not commented! There is no /var/adm/ined.sec file, and there is no any more files in /etc/ftpd/ directory. I´ve seen on forums that if /etc/ftpaccess is not present, should not be a problem.
So why I am unable to ftp?

Please help

"I am unable to" is not a useful problem
description. It does not say what you did.
It does not say what happened when you did
it. As usual, showing commands with their
actual output, and actual file contents, can
be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.

> [...] and install wuftpd [...]

So, what are you using now, the FTP server
which came with HP-UX, or this new one (about
which we know almost nothing)?

> I've check /etc/intetd.conf [...]

While your opinion is interesting, seeing
what's actually in the file would be better,
and, with my weak psychic powers, I'd need
your help to do that.

> [...] to/from [...]

Again, seeing the actual command(s) and
results would be nice, but you don't need to
have a working FTP server on this HP-UX
system if you're trying to use an FTP client
on this HP-UX system to talk to an FTP server
on a different system. What, exactly, are
you trying to do?

I'd start by putting things back the way you
found them, using the FTP server which came
with HP-UX. "inetd -c". Then, I'd try
something simple, like, say, (on the HP-UX
system):

ftp localhost

and report back what you did, what's in the
configuration files, and what happens (_not_
what you think it all means).

Re: wuftpd 2.6.1 not working

Hi

This is a fresh installation done by the HP partner, so this is what I get when I try to ftp another hp-ux server running the same release of hp-ux (11.31)

itc01[279]/ #ftp 10.100.48.11
Connected to 10.100.48.11.
220 prep01 FTP server (Revision 4.0 Version wuftpd-2.6.1 Wed Jun 18 07:11:14 GMT 2008) ready.
Name (10.100.48.11:root): root
331 Password required for root.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp>

is that more clear?

Which server is this?

All the above tells me is that there is either: 1) an authentication problem when logging in as root or 2) root is not allowed to log in via FTP.

FTP'ing **TO** another server has absolutely nothing to do with the version of FTP that is installed on the system you initiate the connection from.

It's not clear to me which system is the FTP
client and which is the server. Or which FTP
server program is used where.

Is that the HP-supplied server? (Mine seems
to be older.)

That looks exactly as if a bad password was
specified. Are there any strange characters
in the "root" password which are being eaten
by the terminal driver?

On the FTP server system:

ls -l /etc/ftpd /etc/shells

Re: wuftpd 2.6.1 not working

Hi,
form the previous replies its clear that,
U have give the correct password, or u need to check where direct ftp is allowed to root or not.

Try to check ftp with other user.

Hope this solves ur query.

What. exactly, "Does not work"? What,
exactly, did you do? What. exactly, happened
when you did it?

Can you do anything else, like, say, Telnet,
using the same log-in info?

Hi,

without PAM won't authenticate passwords longer than 8 chars... are your case?
check your PAM configuration change (/etc/pam.conf)
Restart the inetd:
/usr/sbin/inetd -c
