Array setup & VMs migration best practice

Hi there -

We are in the process of configuring our new primary and backup arrays(NIMBLE HF series, 84 RAW). In the Volume creation stage we created 2TB volumes(file,SQL,Exchange=performance policies assigned) for manageability purposes. Should our backup array reflect the same policies or can one leave it as a default or VMware 5 policy.

In the VM migration planning phase 95% of our VMs are "Thick Provision Lazy Zeroed". Should we keep it the same source format when migrating to the NIMBLE? Or is there any feature loss by keep the format the same when prompted.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Array setup & VMs migration best practice

Hello,

When you say backup- do you mean downstream replication array? Or are you using something like Veeam to backup from one array to the other?

If the former, then the volumes will be auto-created and replicated with the correct application policies.

If the latter, then it really doesn't matter.

RE your second question - don't go Thick Provisioning, go for Thin in VMware. no problems with having it thin in VMware and thin on Nimble.

I'd also encourage to look at VVols as a whole, as all these questions are redundant.

Thanks
