Data Migration on the Same Array

After a recent HIPAA review we found out that our data is not encrypted at rest.  That made some people nervous  and now i'm nervous.  I see that in order to encrypt the volumes i will have to trasfer teh current data to a newly encrypted volume.  I really can't find any documentation on this.  Most of what i find relates to  migrating data to new arrays.  I need to do mine volume by volume.  Can anyone shed any light on this?  Also how much overhead is there with encryption?  Any help is appreciated.   Thanks

Re: Data Migration on the Same Array

What kind of applications/hosts connect to the data on these volumes?  If these are VMware ESX hosts, for e.g., you could create new VMFS datastores on encrypted volumes, and just storage vmotion the VMs over to the new datastores.

Perry,

If you're asking about performance overhead with encryption, it's minimal - probably not more than a percentage point or two. Especially with the relatively newer array models, which can leverage the Intel AES-NI instruction set, the performance impact is near zero.

Well that just goes to show that i had my blinders on.  It is  a VMware environment.  Thank you so much for the reply.  That makes it much easier.  Although there is a lot of data.  Thanks again!
