Future of Pervasive Computing and IoT Connected devices

In this pervasive environment, the user can access any device from anywhere. Pervasive computing and its realization, known as the “Internet of Things,” entails an ever-expanding collection of connected devices that capture and share data.

Purpose of Pervasive Computing

As we talk about IOT with our customers, their goal is to digitize their enterprise with the goal of having more data with which they can be far more effective in running their operations. But the challenge that so many customers are facing is that they have data and it is flowing, but they don’t know what to do with it. One of the fundamental reason is that the value of the data that they are collecting changes over time. The data have value for a very brief period of time and after that, it becomes a fact that can be looked at but you cannot change the data. What we really need to do here is to collect the data, work with it in a timely fashion then we can change the systems and that’s the only way you gain efficiency in services. To do that, we put compute out on the edge of the network or we call it an intelligent edge and another way to look at it is Pervasive computing. So we have compute all around the wider network and it allows us to act upon the data in a timely manner and the end result is we get huge value from that data. This is the whole purpose or goal of Pervasive Computing or intelligent edge.

HPE OEM Benefit

IOT data originates remotely, often from equipment at the edge that emits analog data in industries like energy, manufacturing, and utilities. Outside the traditional data center or cloud, the edge is in the field, on a plant floor, on an oil rig or copper mine – generating business, engineering, and scientific insights. The vision of intelligent systems is that the consumer and organizations will be connected across a multitude of devices, machine to machine and cloud-enabled networks that are seamless, personalized and secure. In a lot of these systems, the compute, unlike the general purpose of the compute, is very segregated, but at the edge, there is a very different profile for compute. So, at the edge compute is very integral to the system, designed into the product that’s an OEM motion, if compute gets sold to the system integrator and then, that solution gets to that customer.

Today, IoT data is sent to a data center or the cloud for future processing or analysis. Imagine if you could process this data at the remote site. The result is the ability to take instant action and affect immediate control of your “things.” HPE is leading this move from the data center to the edge, enabling a new wave of technologies that have not been possible before – machine learning at the edge, fraud prevention, automated maintenance support and Augmented Reality (AR) technology.

Opportunities

The way we see it, pervasive computing is the next paradigm in information technology. As connectivity acts as the driving force for change over the next couple of years, we will experience a point where change rapidly spikes—major high-tech players will fall and new ones will appear seemingly overnight.

When you imagine these architectures, pervasive computing is distributed around an enterprise, it implies to wide area networks capable of pervasive computing. There are two key aspects, a significant one is SDN it gives us the ability to manage wide area networks over very changing and dynamic workloads. Perhaps, more importantly, is the new 5G networks that will start to deploy in a couple of years. 5G will be extremely important in this scenario of pervasive edge computing, we are working to deliver compute for 5G and some of the interesting things about 5G are that it enables you to put compute at the mobile edge. And so there is a convergence here where we take our intelligent edge so we imagine it in the industrialized world, but the same compute architectures are contemplating for the mobile edge compute system. So those are key opportunities, developing around pervasive computing.

Key Applications

Real-time analytics has a lot of promising capability in this area. There is significant work going on in data center analytics into more streaming analytics, real-time capabilities.

We say the term pervasive computing because we’re not just talking about devices connecting to the Internet. We’re thinking about how to integrate technology with information, and believe the future needs to accommodate navigating a network of computation that we live in, not just use.
