Future-proof your IT with Composable Infrastructure
Composable infrastructure is a framework whose compute, storage, and network fabric resources are considered as services. In this infrastructure, resources are logically pooled so that administrators don't have to configure hardware that supports a specific software application.
To put it technically, it is the concept of being able to take compute, storage and networking hardware and assemble them in a particular way using orchestration. When your use case is completed, you can decompose and recompose the same components in a way to meet the new needs. Beyond that point, it also includes the concept of being able to do this with hardware on demand as your usage and requirements change throughout the day. For peak workloads, you may need to compose infrastructure to run a billing cycle and then decompose and recompose the same to be web front-end servers for e-commerce during a peak usage โ like Cyber Friday. The key here is orchestration and with the orchestration comes speed. With Composable, HPE is allowing data centers to come up with and use as varied physical configuration for their needs as they want.
In many ways, composable infrastructure provides a pool of resources similar to how virtualization provides access that can be consumed in multiple ways. The critical difference is that these are physical resources being sliced and diced without a hypervisor layer providing the pooling. HPE has a strict definition for Composable Infrastructure. If any of these characteristics are missing, they will not be classified as Composable, no matter how close it may resemble. We call this next-generation the two-mode approach to composable infrastructure. It is designed around three core principles:
Unified API
- Single line of code to abstract every element of the infrastructure for full infrastructure programmability
- Bare-metal interface of infrastructure as a service
Software-Defined Intelligence
- Template driven workload composition
- Automation to enable streamlined operation of the system (HPE calls it frictionless operation)
Fluid Resource Pools
- Single infrastructure of disaggregated pools
- Physical, virtual and containers
- Auto-integrating of resource capacity
This new class of unified, two-mode infrastructure facilitates continuous services, application delivery models, and enables applications to be updated as needed, rather than just once or twice a year. Composable infrastructure enables IT to operate like a cloud provider to the lines of business and the extended enterprise. It maximizes the speed, agility, and efficiency of core infrastructure and operations to consistently meet SLAs and provide the predictable performance needed to support core workloads for both today and tomorrow.
