HP OpenNFV Update

Back in March I posted a blog reviewing the launch of HP’s Software-Defined Networking (SDN) app store.  No conversation about SDN is complete without a discussion of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).  The two technologies are employed hand-in-hand to enable on-demand applications and services.   Whether you are developing industry-specific solutions for communications service providers or moving elements of any industry solution to the cloud it is important to learn about SDN and NFV.

SDN is an architectural framework for constructing highly agile and programmable networks.  It improves automation by decoupling the network’s forwarding plane (the networking infrastructure) from the control plane (the control logic) and by providing abstract, network-wide programming interfaces.

NFV optimizes the networking infrastructure itself by decoupling networking functions from the underlying hardware.  In other words, NFV allows service providers and enterprises to avoid special-purpose network devices (firewalls, session border controllers, etc.) by implementing networking functions in software on virtualized industry-standard servers.  By consolidating multiple functions onto common hardware, network operators can reduce equipment and operating expenses and accelerate time-to-market.

HP has been on the forefront of SDN and NFV innovation and thought-leadership.  At Mobile World Congress 2014 we announced a comprehensive OpenNFV Program, which included the publication of an open NFV reference architecture, the creation of HP OpenNFV Labs, and the introduction of the HP OpenNFV Partner Program.

To mark the anniversary of the OpenNFV announcement Julia Mason-Ochinero from the HP Enterprise marketing provided an update on the first year’s progress.  Check out Julie’s blog to learn more about the growing industry momentum behind NFV, the expanding HP OpenNFV partner ecosystem and recent major HP NFV customer announcements like Telefónica.
