HPE Discover Virtual Experience 2021: Here’s how these industries are leading the way in the edge
Edge computing has grown exponentially over the last few years. From driverless cars to supermarket robots, edge computing is having a huge impact on our daily lives. Almost every industry has adopted this technology in the journey to speed digital transformation efforts. Here're a few industries leading the way in the edge computing arms race:
Manufacturing industry: Edge computing is reshaping the entire manufacturing value chain by collecting and processing data in no time. This technology is helping manufacturers to use more flexible, standard hardware and software to be able to access and share data relevant to their manufacturing processes. The ability to monitor the condition of their assets remotely helps manufacturers generate new revenue streams.
Transport industry: High-end automobiles can contain hundreds of sensors, measuring everything from engine performance to how closely you're tailgating the car in front of you, with as many as 150 electronic control units translating sensor data into useful information. As fully autonomous vehicles continue to develop, they'll rely on edge computing devices in traffic lights, sidewalks, and the road itself to guide you safely home.
Healthcare industry: Within hospitals, edge computing and AI are enabling faster, more accurate diagnoses and automating the delivery of medicine. One of the best examples is how diabetes patients can now rely on an automated insulin delivery system that uses artificial pancreas sensors inserted under the skin to monitor blood sugar levels and transmit the data to an insulin pump and a handheld device. Algorithms inside the pump device predict where blood sugar levels are likely to be, then direct an external pump to deliver the appropriate amount of insulin. Doesn't that sound cool?
Given the growing impact of the edge devices we now carry around in our pockets without even thinking about their computing power, the world is ripe for new and more interesting ways for the edge to become front and center in our daily lives.
