HPE Launches The ProLiant EPYC Based Server: OEM to benefit

The new Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) ProLiant DL385 Gen10 server, powered by AMD's EPYC processors, set new world records in SPEC benchmarks. With this HPE extends the world’s most secure industry standard server portfolio. The secure and flexible 2P 2U HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Server takes full advantage of the EPYC processor’s high core count and memory capacity to deliver a new formula for server virtualization.

The new HPE ProLiant DL385 leverages the AMD EPYC™ System on a Chip (SoC) to enable customers to achieve higher utilization and ROI while delivering unmatched security for virtualized workloads. HPE became the first large server OEM to launch a two-socket server designed around the AMD EPYC datacenter SoC, with the release of the HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 server. Considering the historical success of the older generation HPE ProLiant DL385 with Opteron, it seems fitting for HPE to serve as the lead OEM with EPYC. This server performs very well in virtualization, big data, analytics, VDI and specific HPC workloads. The new server in partnership with AMD, offering up to 50 percent lower cost per virtual machine (VM) than traditional server solutions.

The promise of virtualization delivered

One of the primary drivers of virtualization was the need to consolidate and reduce the number of physical servers in a data center. This consolidation leads to both direct and indirect cost savings by maximizing hardware utilization, lowering energy bills, staffing, and maintenance.

However, over a decade later the average utilization of a server still sits at about 30%. Part of the reason for this lack of utility tied to server architectures. The disparity between compute, I/O and memory have made it nearly impossible for IT organizations to achieve high server utilization and still deliver well-performing VMs.  

The HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 has the potential to change this equation. The AMD EPYC SoC, which sits at the heart of this server, connects very high core counts to very high memory capacity, across many memory channels. This increase in memory channels allows for more data to move from memory to compute cores, and by alleviating this bottleneck, more virtual machines can run with better performance. The HPE ProLiant DL385 and AMD Secure Processor also enable:


  • Secure Encrypted Memory − all or a portion of the memory can be encrypted to protect data against memory hacks and scrapes.
  • Secure Encrypted Virtualization − VMs and the hypervisor each have separate encryption keys, isolating the VMs from one another and from the hypervisor itself to protect access to data in shared guest data areas.


What to do with all this memory?
So, what do we do with all this memory? In two words, “Big Data.” The HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Server appears to be architected for in-memory databases as well as Hadoop distributions. The 4TB memory footprint and 16 memory channels in a two-socket configuration mean bigger datasets can be analyzed and transformed into business intelligence, faster than the servers that house them today.  


What about security?

The HPE ProLiant DL385 delivers unmatched security via the HPE Silicon Root of Trust, a unique link between the HPE Integrated Light Out (iLO) silicon and the iLO firmware to ensure servers do not execute compromised firmware code. The HPE Silicon Root of Trust connected to the AMD Secure Processor to validate the HPE firmware before the server is allowed to boot. To summarise, EPYC allows the HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 to support more virtual machines per server, process more data in parallel, access more local storage while providing unprecedented security. The novel platform appears to be tailor-made for virtualized environments. While virtualization and memory intensive applications (such as in-memory databases) are the highlights for the HPE ProLiant DL385, this makes it a reliable choice for general purpose computing.
