How to Embrace the New Industrial Revolution with HPE OEM
As manufacturers embark on their journey to Industry 4.0, they are accelerating digital to optimize, modernize and automate. - Flowserve: Harnessing the power of Industrial IoT and the Edge
How does a 225-year-old company reinvent itself for the digital age? By leveraging instant access to real-time data to enable machine learning, avoid reduced downtime and more. Using HPE Edgeline IoT Systems, PTC software, and National Instruments' sensors, Flowserve is accessing a level of compute not possible before. In doing so, the pump company enters the digital age--and expects to see a $500 million increase in business over the next five years.
Flowserve collaborated with HPE, PTC and National Instruments' IoT technologies to increase business efficiency and reduce unplanned downtime in the manufacturing industry through edge computing.
“Organizations that take advantage of the vast amount of data and run deep analytics at the edge can become digital disrupters within their industries,” said Dr. Tom Bradicich, vice president and general manager, Servers and IoT Systems, HPE. “HPE has built machine learning and real-time analytics into its IoT platforms, and provides services that help customers understand how data can best be leveraged, enabling them to optimize maintenance management, improve operations efficiency and ultimately, drive significant cost savings” he added.

When you are a crucial link in a global supply chain, unplanned downtime is a deal-breaker. The auto parts OEM industry is one of the largest private production companies in today’s global automotive market wanted to leverage Industry 4.0 innovations to tackle a perennial challenge: unplanned downtime. Not only is unplanned downtime costly, but it also strikes at the core of Hirotec’s promise to its customers, it puts the company at risk of falling behind on delivery timetables.
To realize the promise of Industry 4.0 technologies, however, its operations team needs to pair its Operations Technology (OT) expertise with IT skills and knowledge. Moreover, it needed to do this without diluting its resources or diverting focus from its core manufacturing priorities. Hirotec also required an architecture built to eliminate data processing latency; it wanted the ability to leverage analysis in real time to control its factory machinery.
The right technology partners pave the way to a tailored IoT solution. Hirotec’s first step was to find a partner to complement its OT skillset with IT capabilities. Its search led it to PTC, an HPE partner and provider of IoT and augmented reality solutions. Hirotec deployed the solution on an on premise cloud platform running on HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen9 Servers.
For its first pilot of the solution, Hirotec deployed an on-site business-class server to support edge analytics, but the server was bulky and impractical. So when it configured its second and third pilots of the IoT platform, Hirotec selected HPE Edgeline systems to support edge analytics. The ruggedized HPE Edgeline systems small footprint minimized the need for Hirotec to sacrifice valuable factory floor space. Also, the methods do not require specialized cooling to operate.
With the advent of Industry 4.0 manufacturing models, Hirotec realized the time was right to leverage functionality like predictive analytics that promises to drive significant improvements to its manufacturing operations — developments that could enable tremendous strides toward the ultimate goal of eliminating unplanned downtime entirely. Hirotec found 100% reduction in time to manually inspect production systems, allowing the technicians to re-invest that time in tasks that drive more value to production workflows.

Every time a production system goes down in an industrial process, it creates a troubling ripple. Entire production processes grind to a halt. Further downstream, the outage often disrupts factory output, which in turn upends production chains from the supply through inventory and distribution. The bottom-line consequences: significant hits to revenue and customer satisfaction. The company discovered a solution by leveraging the IIoT.
Realizing the game-changing potential of the Industrial IoT, Kaeser equipment features sensors to capture critical environmental and performance data such as temperature, humidity, and vibration. The data transmitted directly, and in real time, to a system that conducts ongoing predictive analytics to determine whether a part might be prone to failure. This allows Kaeser to identify and replace faulty parts during regularly scheduled maintenance helping avoid unexpected, costly outages on customers’ production lines. Because its legacy SAP application did not meet current Industry 4.0 / Industrial IoT requirements, Kaeser upgraded to SAP HANA running on HPE servers to implement this solution.
Kaeser upgraded to SAP HANA running on HPE ConvergedSystem 900 and Superdome X servers. It migrated its SAP Business Suite software to five HPE AppSystems for SAP HANA, to orchestrate new business processes across the organization, improve supply chain management, and harness the power of big data analytics.
