Leading Telecom Solution Provider Eliminates White Box Risks with HPE OEM
The old adage “you get what you pay for” certainly applies to white box servers. Last year, HPE OEM’s Paul Santilli wrote a great blog exposing some of the hidden costs and risks associated with white box platforms. While commodity servers might provide an inexpensive path to market, their advantages are often fleeting. As Paul points out, most white box vendors lack the stable technology platforms and global distribution and support services solution providers count on to meet their long-term business goals.
Hampered by supply chain problems or quality control issues, many white box OEMs make the move to HPE to improve business outcomes. HPE OEM Mobigen is a perfect example. The South Korean company’s Big Data solutions help telecommunications service providers improve service quality, simplify network diagnostics and optimize end-user experiences.
Like many solution providers, Mobigen’s intellectual property resides in their software. Not surprisingly, the first release of their IRIS Big Data DB product was sold as a software-only solution. While flexible for the customer, the ISV approach often led to integration issues, reliability concerns and implementation delays. Mobigen attempted to overcome these constraints by offering a turnkey solution based on a white box server platform. But like many OEMs who go down the white box path, they were hindered by product stability, performance and support problems.
HPE Servers Meet Stringent Performance and Reliability Requirements
As a next step, the company looked at reselling Dell servers. But they quickly determined the Dell products could not meet strict telecommunications service provider reliability requirements. Mobigen ultimately selected HPE as their preferred technology supplier, standardizing on HPE ProLiant, Apollo and Moonshot systems. HPE’s comprehensive server portfolio addresses a wide range of customer requirements while satisfying stringent service provider reliability requirements and intensive Big Data performance demands.
HPE’s global engineering, distribution and support resources played a key role in the decision process. Mobigen uses HPE Factory Express Custom Integration services to simplify system assembly, test and delivery. “We’re able to select the most appropriate HPE server and hardware configuration to meet the needs of each customer, and we count on HPE to configure and deliver the servers,” explains Nomota Hiongun Kim, director of the Research Center for Mobigen. “This streamlines production and distribution. And since we’re relying on proven servers, our engineers can focus on building our intellectual property and advancing our software instead of worrying about hardware issues.”
