OEM Recap of Mobile World Congress 2017

The annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain is the premier event for
the mobile communications industry. Network equipment providers and operators
use the conference to showcase their capability and telegraph their strategic investments.
Over 100,000 attendees from 2300 companies attended this year.

HPE had 40 demonstrations in our high-traffic Hall 3 booth. We featured the broad
HPE portfolio as it applies across the mobile networking market. We had additional
content in other booths, including a sophisticated 5G network slicing demo in conjunction
with Intel.

Below are the two major takeaways from this yearโ€™s Congress:

5G is accelerating

The 5G network architecture enables workloads not possible on todayโ€™s networks.
Autonomous vehicles, augmented/virtual reality, and next-gen IoT solutions were
featured by the leading operators. The market potential of these new workloads is
accelerating their investment in 5G technology. Several operators discussed live 5G
deployments this year and equipment providers are gearing up for wide scale deployments
by 2020.

The software-defined, cloud-centric architecture of 5G is fundamental to enabling
these workloads. This architecture shift represents significant new opportunities for
HPE. Our OEMs need to rapidly acquire the data center technologies we excel at
and adapt them to the telco cloud. Our ability to collaborate and execute with OEMs
will be key to claiming this new ground.

Cloud computing is coming to the network edge

Cloud computing distributed to the network edge was a dominant theme among
equipment providers. Known as Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), it offers
application developers and content providers cloud-computing capabilities and an
IT service environment at the edge of the mobile network. MEC is characterized by
ultra-low latency and high bandwidth as well as real-time access to radio network
information that can be leveraged by applications.

MEC is driving a new ecosystem and value chain and enabling operators to finally be
more than just a โ€œdump pipeโ€. It will enable new vertical business segments and services
for consumers and enterprise customers. Operators can now open their Radio
Access Network (RAN) edge to authorized third-parties, allowing them to flexibly
and rapidly deploy innovative applications and services towards mobile subscribers,
enterprises and vertical segments.

MEC is at the center of the convergence of IT and telecommunications networking.
HPE is well positioned to take a leadership role in this new space.

Finally, perhaps one of the most valuable parts of MWC for OEM are the strategic meetings with
many of our OEM customers. Post-MWC, the OEM organization is racing to turn the promise of 5G into real OEM business for our customers.
