OEMs Look to the Internet of Things to Improve Business Outcomes

Last week HPE and Intel hosted a series of IoT forums for OEM executives in London, Munich and Dubai.  Dozens of OEMs gathered to explore IoT market opportunities and to meet with IoT thought leaders.  Experts from HPE and Intel shared insights on IoT business prospects and technology challenges.  And early IoT adopters like BMW and Tesco explained how smart systems are helping them improve business results.  I have received a lot of positive feedback on the event, so I thought I would use this blog to review some of the key takeaways.

IoT Market Opportunities Abound

The event highlighted the sheer depth and breadth of the IoT market.  OEMs are pursuing IoT opportunities in just about every industryโ€”manufacturing, healthcare, energy, retail and telecommunications.   Tesco CTO Edmond Mesrobian explained how intelligent systems and analytics are helping the grocery store giant optimize its supply chain and improve customer experiences.

Intel shared how it uses smart systems to automate manufacturing processes.  For example, an Intel assembly test manufacturing site in Malaysia has achieved a 50% reduction in maintenance time, a 20% reduction in spare costs, and a 25% reduction in non-genuine yield loss.  Intel also described how a partnerโ€™s โ€œconnected cowโ€ application is helping farmers boost milk yields, while improving animal health and longevity.

BMW technologists shared how connected cars and telematics are revolutionizing the automotive industry, transforming customer care, vehicle maintenance and driver safety. And because the Munich event was held at BMW World, attendees had the opportunity to experience some of the latest BMW innovations in person.

IoT Helps Humanity as Well

The forum also highlighted how the Internet of Things is not just about financial rewards.  Intelligent systems are already beginning to improve the planet and the human condition. Mick Keys from HPEโ€™s CTO office explained how HPE is working with the World Economic Forum to help developing countries increase crop yields using drones and visual analytics. Intel explained how the companyโ€™s smart manufacturing processes reduce greenhouse gas emissions and raw material consumption.  And an HPE OEM described how its in-home monitoring solutions help improve the healthcare and well-being of older adults.

IoT Technology Challenges

Of course, the executive forum also covered many of the technical issues surrounding IoT.  Lin Nease, HPEโ€™s Chief IoT Technologist, explained how the Internet of Things introduces unprecedented scalability, interoperability and performance challenges for OEM solution architects.   Vast numbers of IoT endpointsโ€”sensors, smartphones, tabletsโ€”will generate massive volumes of data that must be gathered and processed in a highly efficient and reliable manner.  Lin detailed how HPEโ€™s new Edgeline IoT Systems are ideal for implementing a distributed IoT system architecture that pushes data processing and control functions to the edge of the network for ultimate scalability and resiliency.

Next Steps

Donโ€™t let the IoT market pass you by. Talk to your OEM account manager to learn more about IoT business opportunities and HPE solutions for the Internet of Things.  And be sure to arrange a visit to a joint HPE and Intel IoT Discovery Lab to experience smart applications first-hand or to test out or pursue your own IoT solutions.
