Tantalus leverages HPE OEM solutions to serve the fast-growing energy utility marketplace
Smart grid initiatives seek to improve operations, maintenance, and planning by making sure that all components of the electric grid can seamlessly exchange data. A Smart Grid grants opportunities for utilities and consumers to benefit from efficient management of energy and advanced equipment and devices. A reliable, economically competitive, and environmentally sustainable electricity system is the cornerstone of the modern society. The Fourth Industrial Revolution builds on the digital revolution and combines multiple technologies leading to unprecedented paradigm shifts in the economy, business, society, and for individuals. The electricity landscape is an example of the Fourth Industrial Revolution as it undergoes a transformation with evolving technologies, innovative business models and shifting regulatory landscapes.
The Smart Grid provides the energy industry with the opportunity to reach unparalleled levels of reliability, efficiency, and security in serving consumers. The digital technology of the Smart Grid enables two-way communication between utilities and customers, and sensors that can monitor transmission lines. This technology results in restored electricity; decreased costs for both utilities and customers; and control on consumers on how much electricity they use, and how much it costs โ among other benefits.
Converting the data center into an intelligent, energy-effective asset for your business
Grid edge technologies are paving the way towards a new energy system that will unlock significant economic and societal benefits. However, there is a great risk for value destruction if the system fails to efficiently capture the value of distributed energy resources, which could leave a generation or network assets stranded and see customers defect from the grid. This risk represents one more reason to identify and take the right actions that will accelerate and make the transition cost effective. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) creates new possibilities for technology to have a meaningful impact on people, businesses, governments, and society. With the broadest technology portfolio spanning servers, converged infrastructure, storage, hyper-converged networking, software, services, and IT infrastructure, HPE delivers solutions for customersโ most complex challenges in every region of the world.
Tantalus, a Smart Grid technology company based in Raleigh, North Carolina, provides an integral part of that system- Tantalus Utility Network (TUNet), a network that enables utilities to monitor, control and respond to events anywhere, at any time. The heart and brain of TUNet is the TUNet Control Center (TCC). This software application manages the network communications and all the data retrieved from intelligent endpoints across TUNet.
Since 2010, Tantalus has leveraged the partnerships of Hewlett Packard Enterprise's Original Equipment Manufacturer Program (HPE OEM) and Arrow Intelligent Systems (AIS) to deliver the hardware that powers its network. HPE OEM provides the hardware including racks, high-speed cabling, ethernet switches, servers, disks, arrays and power bars. Arrow acquires the hardware from HPE OEM, assembles the entire system, loads the software, does the initial configuration and documentation of the software, and ships it to Tantalusโ customers.
Originally, Tantalus selected Arrow to supply the HPE hardware, as a premier distributor of HPE OEM. Eventually, Tantalus employed Arrow to assemble and ship the entire TCC system to customers as well. Arrow also manages the warranty submissions between the customer and HPE. โHPE brings a solid, reliable and reputable enterprise-grade product to the solution,โ says Harold Hankel, vice president of manufacturing at Tantalus. Tantalus hopes to expand the benefits received working with HPE and Arrow to other parts of the business to meet both their schedule and customersโ needs. TCC consists of a collection of servers with additional disk storage. The typical configuration is three servers โ a database, application and presentation server โ plus an external storage drive array. The HPE hardware and the products well recognized among customers.
The HPE OEM difference
The electricity flow can be controlled when connected to a smart grid to reduce distribution costs and power outages. HPE OEM has the depth, breadth, and expertise to bring it all together. It has the numbers on record for how much money the energy smart technologies can save. The HPE OEM Program has a proven portfolio across server, storage, networking, management, power and cooling to deliver a converged infrastructure to deliver the next-generation data center. And itโs all delivered the way you want, whether it be in-house or outsourced via the cloud, with deep partner integration that accelerates innovation and value.
