The Machine: A New Kind of Computer from HP

Paul_Santilli

If you are an HP OEM partner you are probably familiar with our slogan “Build your brand on HP.”  With six decades of experience as an OEM supplier, we know what it takes to be a trusted partner.  We offer the stable technology platforms and global resources to help you grow your business—today.  And with our long history of innovation you can be confident HP will deliver the cutting-edge technologies to help you maintain your competitive advantage into the future.

From developing the first commercialized RISC computer in 1986, to pioneering BladeSystem, Converged Systems, and Apollo and Moonshot, HP has a proven track record of innovation.   And HP Labs, our prestigious research organization, continues to advance that tradition.   HP Labs’ groundbreaking project dubbed The Machine is a perfect example. Conceived to support the massive scalability and performance requirements of the cloud, big data, and the Internet of Things, The Machine fundamentally reimagines computing with a system-on-a-chip approach that combines processors, memory, and photonic connectivity.

Believe it or not, modern computers are based on architectural models that date back to the 1940s.   Today’s computers squander cycles and energy shuffling data across distinct memory and storage elements over relatively slow electronic communications busses.    By some estimates, roughly 90% of the work performed by a contemporary computer is devoted to moving information between memory and storage.  The Machine eliminates these constraints by consolidating discrete memory, cache and storage elements into “universal memory.” At the heart of this innovation lies an HP Labs invention called the Memristor, which provides persistent storage, memory and high-speed cache functions in a single, cost-effective device.

By fusing memory and storage, eliminating complex data hierarchies, and bringing processing closer to the data, The Machine will enable a quantum leap in compute performance and energy efficiency to address new workloads and use cases.  Talented scientists, engineers and researchers at HP Labs, and across HP, are working to bring The Machine to life.

For our OEMs, The Machine will help fuel new solutions that break design and performance barriers and unleash innovation.  Build your brand on HP and face the future with confidence with breakthrough technologies like The Machine!
