VCE OEMS: Don’t let the Dell/EMC Merger Put your Business on Hold

Dell’s acquisition of EMC has many OEMs shaking their heads.  The press has been full of conflicting stories about how the acquisition will impact not only EMC and Dell OEMs, but also VCE OEMs.  If you are an OEM who uses Dell, EMC or VCE platforms in your solutions, now is the perfect time to take a fresh look at HPE.  HPE Integrated Systems—HPE ConvergedSystem, HPE Hyper-Converged Systems, and the new HPE Synergy—eliminate cost and complexity for traditional workloads as well as newer applications like IoT, Big Data and cloud-based services.  And unlike VCE Vblock, HPE Integrated Systems were designed from the ground up as fully integrated solutions, optimized for virtualization, cloud and mobility.

Don’t Let the Merger Get in the Way of your Business

VCE was formed in 2009 as a joint venture between Cisco, EMC and VMware.  Today, VCE offers Vblock converged-infrastructure solutions (made up of Cisco servers and switches, and EMC storage arrays) as well as VxRail hyperconverged infrastructure solutions (jointly developed by EMC and VMware). Both product lines could be affected by the acquisition, impacting Dell, EMC and VCE OEMs.

What Becomes of the Cisco/VCE Relationship?

Legally, Dell can’t make any official pronouncements related to product roadmaps or development plans until the transaction is complete.  Publically, EMC and Cisco both say they are committed to VCE.  But many industry analysts speculate the Cisco server and switching elements within VCE Vblock will ultimately be displaced by Dell technology.

And Cisco’s recent foray into the hyperconverged infrastructure market has industry observers questioning the vendor’s long-term commitment to VCE.  In March, Cisco announced an OEM deal with hyperconverged startup Springpath.  The new Cisco HyperFlex solution competes directly with VCE’s VxRail HCI solution.

What Happens to the Dell/Nutanix Relationship?

The EMC acquisition is likely to alter Dell’s HCI product strategy as well.  Dell has an OEM relationship with hyperconverged infrastructure vendor Nutanix and has been actively reselling the Nutanix product since 2014.  Many analysts expect Dell to abandon the Nutanix solution in favor of the EMC-based VxRail product.

Werner Zurcher, research VP for IT storage and disaster recovery at Gartner, summed up the overall situation well last fall when he explained to Information Age “the merger is likely to divert management attention from customer concerns and market dynamics for the next two years, or longer. VCE, the EMC subsidiary that manufactures converged infrastructure appliances, will eventually transition away from being mostly Cisco UCS-based—either next year or in 2017—putting the Dell-Nutanix alliance in serious danger.”

Avoid the Confusion—Make the Move to HPE

Are you worried about how the Dell/EMC merger will impact your business?  Make the move to HPE to avoid risk and uncertainty.  With HPE, you get:

  • Cohesively engineered converged infrastructure solutions with unified OneView management (VCE solutions require multiple network and system management applications with distinct UIs and APIs)
  • Solid partnerships with multiple leading virtualization technology providers
  • Dedicated OEM engineering personnel
  • Worldwide distribution and support resources
