Disabling Media Sensing on a server with Teaming.
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1054
Date: 7/20/2005
Time: 3:22:06 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: D01SVR52
Description:
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (An unexpected network error occurred. ). Group Policy processing aborted.
on our Proliant servers. Checking Microsoft's Knowledge base we get this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326152
Which says to do this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;239924
However, we are concerned about turning off Media Sensing since most of our Proliant servers have teams.
So my question is, will the team still work correctly with Media Sensing turned off?

Re: Disabling Media Sensing on a server with Teaming.
Is it reasonable to assume that you've installed the latest teaming NIC drivers? If you're not sure, give us the server model info and we'll steer you to the newest drivers.
Make a great day!

I believe there is anewer driver, osftware, and possibly firmware, as well. You didn't mention what OS you're running so I guessed 32-bit W2K3. Thedownloads for that OS are here:

Re: Disabling Media Sensing on a server with Teaming.
Based on this excerpt from the MSKB article you referred to:
"If you disable Media Sense, and if you cannot join an Active Directory domain or download group policies, make sure that you are running the most current drivers for your network adapter. If you are already running the most current drivers for your network adapter, the only workaround currently available is to switch to a different network adapter.",
and you're unwilling to disable Media Sense, the only alternative is a different NIC. Since you apparently have multiple servers with the same symptoms, I'd be inclined to disable Media Sense on one of them (It's not clear to me why this would cause a problem with teaming?), and a different NIC on another and see where that takes you.
Make a great day!

Re: Disabling Media Sensing on a server with Teaming.
Try posting your question here, in the Proliant forum:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/categoryhome.do?categoryId=264
I'm sorry, I simply don't know. My inclination would be to try it and see what happens.
Make a great day!
