Frozen Computer

I have recently bought a HP Pavilion computer 8622 with Intel Pentium Processor 667 MHz. The OS is Win 98 Second Edition. My computer gets frozen very frequently especially while using the mouse to scroll. In such situations nothing works other than turnning off the computer and restarting. I am not able to demonstrate this problem to the technitians as this occur once in two or three days only. I am using softwares bundled by HP . I feel like changing the OS to Linux because of this problem. Please help!

Re: Frozen Computer

Vinod -- right-click "My Computer" and look at the device properties. Check to see the IRQ being used by the mouse and see if it conflicts with any other device. I've seen this happen with modem and sound cards before. Is it a serial mouse or is it connected to the mouse port?

Re: Frozen Computer

Thanks very much for the help. I have checked the IRQ settings. There are no conflicts. The mouse is a serial mouse.
