Need to Create a Boot CD-R for Symantec Ghost v8

Need to Create a Boot CD-R for Symantec Ghost v8

In the past, I have used boot diskettes for ghosting. Since some newer PCs (and laptops) don't have diskette drives, I need to create a boot CD-R for creating and restoring ghost images, using TCP/IP for the connection. Is there a howto somewhere? I have tried unsuccessfully to do this before. I need step-by-step instructions.

I would be using Roxio v6 to burn the CD-R.

Hi Jay

I think you may find that Ghost will (on set up) ask if you require a bootable CD before you start the session. It will then ask for a bootdisk to be put in drive "A". So your fix would be use a PC that has an A drive to create a boot CD. Another way would be opening a PC (won't work so easy with a notebook though, unless a USB floppy works) and just connecting a floppy to the system perform the backup (creating a bootable CD/DVD) then removing it.

Re: Need to Create a Boot CD-R for Symantec Ghost v8

Hi Eddie,

I will check it out perhaps tomorrow, or not until next week, with the long holiday weekend here in the US. Many people were already on July 4th holiday this week!

My experience dates back to DOS days, so I should be able to figure this out.

Please keep an eye on this thread, in case I need more help.

Search the internet for "bartpe" and add ghost as a plugin. Perfect solution!

Hope this helps!

Re: Need to Create a Boot CD-R for Symantec Ghost v8

Thanks both,

I will check these suggestions out, if not tomorrow (Saturday), then next week. Stay tuned. 7 points is too little for a suggestion that works. I don't know why more people don't see it that way.

I am a little sorry to see diskette drives going away. I still remember when the current 3.5" diskette format replaced those awful 5.25" diskettes. We admins were so happy to have a diskette that fit easily in the shirt pocket. The main problem with diskettes is that users store important data on them...wrong, wrong, wrong.

My first HDD was 5MB. I remember thinking how one would ever use all that storage space.

Re: Need to Create a Boot CD-R for Symantec Ghost v8

BTW, the solution is a CD-ROM based windows (running from CD), no floppy. But it brings all advantages like shared drives and all drivers support. You can store your drive image on a shared windows drive that way even over wireless (or to a tape drive too).

Hope this helps!
