error message javascript do not detect

I have an HP6545c with windows98 and peoplepc for internet access. I am unable to access any secure web sites. This means that I cannot check my bank balance or shop on line. Come to think of it, being unable to check my bank balance prevents me from shopping since I haven't reconciled it in years..... Anyway, the error message in the left hand corner of the screen is approximately "javascript (do not detect) If anyone knows how to solve this problem I would appreciate the help as Christmas is coming! Thank you.

You must enable Java in your Browser.
Example for Internet Explorer 6:
Icon of IE on desktop (click right key of mouse) -> Property -> Advance (then remark box relative Java-use, Java-compiler etc.)

Carolyn, adverting...Some options will be effective only after one exited from the Browser or reset of the system.
