system resources low

I've been having problems connecting with my isp for a while. After contacting them, the cs rep went through a couple of fixes then asked me what my system resource was at. It was at 58%. The rep told me to contact hp and get it up to 85%. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get it up to this level. Thanks. E.

Re: system resources low

What type of system do you have ? The system resources can be increased doing a windows cleanup, remove unnecessary links (registry etc). Also increasing the amount of memory will help solving your problem. Sometimes a full bootdisk (c) will decrease your resources.
Let me know your computer type and i give you a link with all the possibilities to increase your systemresources.

Re: system resources low

I got a 6535 pavilion running a celeron processor. I've had it a couple of years now and rarely use it until now. I'm pretty sure it has plenty of memory, just not sure how much. Thanks for the help. e.

Assuming you are running Windows 9x, here are some Config.sys modifications that are proven to help.

Open C:\Config.sys with Notepad and make the following entries if they don't already exist. It's always good to make a backup copy when modifying system files... Just copy the file to another directory or floppy disk and change the extention to .bak

You may need to change your system options to be able to see the file in Explorer. Alternativley, open a DOS box and type: notepad config.sys

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB

Here's a link to a site with the same information and more.

I guess I should put the link in... This site explains all the modifications I suggest as well. One more note on opening the file in notepad... you should be in the root of the C: drive when typing the command via the DOS prompt.

Re: system resources low

58% is not real low, less than 30% is real low.

Real easy fixes to make is remove your graphics background pic and screensaver.

Also reduce the amount of icons on the screen, put them in a folder.

Problems in connecting can be the phone line and if it has rained. Extra humidity and moisture can cause marginal wiring to go really bad. I replaced all my house phone wiring with cat 5 cable and connect speeds on a 56K modem went from 38K to 48K and 52K.
