Access to freeware directories

Until recently it was possible to browse the VMS freeware CDs on e.g. http://h71000.www7.hp.com/freeware/freeware80/foo/
It was handy to point people to some piece of software (many links in postings to this forum are now invalid too!).

Does anybody know why this happened ?
I know, thanks to mvb.saic.com and other archives it is still possible, but why the hell it is removed from the HP site ? 1 GB of disk space ?:-)

Yes I have discovered that :-(

No, I would not call that an improvement...

There was a company that said "Customer satisfaction", but I can't remember its name...

Re: Access to freeware directories

Interesting. Check the http headers for the web server answering at h71000.www7.hp.com. It's reporting itself as Microsoft-IIS/6.0. That's not what it used to be, IIRC. Donno if it's some sort of a web proxy or such, but there have clearly been some changes.

As for the general case with the Freeware, I have migrated over to the Freeware archives at (as you mention) Mark Berryman's site at:

http://mvb.saic.com/

The HP site was never -- far from it -- a complete collection of the Freeware. In addition to its relative stability and its general directory organization, Mark's site has orders of magnitude more OpenVMS Freeware available, too.

Joe,

I would also suggest sending a message to the OpenVMS Webmaster. Things may have been inadvertently broken.

I did. Let's see what happens...

Re: Access to freeware directories

... and from the webmaster answer I assume it will stay as is
"the present situation is a side-effect of required infrastructure changes to the web site".
