parhaps you need to run the config program for the raid controller?
Any chance of connecting the DAT to another SCSI bus?

damned... i've a bad material configuration... i probably need a DAT connected in an other SCSI bus...

If your DAT is connected to BA controller, may be assume disk prefix (like DK); typing
$ SHO DEV D
do you see some unknown disk?

I think the Smart array 5300A backplane RAID controller does not like tape drives. You need to connect it to one of the other two scsi buses. You will proably have to put it in another storageworks enclosure to do that.

We have a tower mounted DAT. It starts with MK. Your system is not seeing the tape drive. Since it is in a tower it should be connected. The raid controller we have on our DS20 expects the units to be disk. The raid menu is Digital Disk Array Controller - Configuration Utility.

Normally - in my inderstanding ;-)) confi is:

CPU --> SCSI A +(slot1)--> Raid --> disk (only!)
+(slot2)--> other device (like tape)
+(slot3)--> other device (like tape)
+ (ASO)
--> SCSI B etc...
