you need to seek the best combination of refresh rate and screen size that the graphics card will support. You may find lowering the refresh rate will allow you to increase the size.

I set decw$server_refresh_rate to 60,60,60,60,60,60,60,60, and set the resolution back up to 1024 x 768 - and all is well :)
