CIFS V1.1 as member server in Advanced Server Domain?

The 'new' admin guide for CIFS V1.1 indicates that CIFS can be a member server to Advanced server (V7.3B). It's not clear to me if CIFS can also authenticate usernames against the AS SAM (if AS is a PDC). However, this appears to be one of the purposes of Winbind (according to figure 5-1).

Background: We currently have AS in a large production environment (in an OpenVMS cluster). I need to setup an experimental CIFS V1.1 configuration on a cluster node that's not running AS, hopefully as a member server to the AS PDC. I've previously tested CIFS 1.0 and T1.1 in a standalone (workgroup) configuration. I do not want to 'migrate' from AS to CIFS at this time and have read the migration guide. Any advice is welcome.
