I'll let you guys fight that one out. I
don't have a USB-connected DVD drive, so I
know nothing.

Re: COPY/RECORD with DVD-R
Yes, but the question is whether cdrecord
can work with a USB device, and, as I said, I
can't test it.

Re: COPY/RECORD with DVD-R
cdrtools doesn't work with a USB-drive. It is not the recording commands that are different but the OpenVMS USB-driver gives status informations back differently.

Re: COPY/RECORD with DVD-R
This may explain my confusion.
http://support.necam.com/Optical/ND6650A_specs.asp
says the device has an IDE interface but
$ UCM SHOW DEV/FU DNA0
says
2.0.0.0.0.0 -> DNA0 - HEWLETT PACKARD INTEGRITY SERVER
So let's go with the second option: IDE device via an internal USB bridge.

I have elected to use DVD+R media and stick with COPY/RECORD. (I had to go and buy some DVD+R media, since we only had DVD-R media.)
The output from this burn needs to be readable on (company internal) PCs and any recent PC DVD drive should be able to read all types of DVD media anyway. In particular, I tested it and it works.
Since John G raised the issue of brands of media ... I bought TDK and had no problems with recording on VMS or reading back on the PC. YMMV.
