Cannot start TCPIP: TCPIP-E-STARTFAIL INETACPERR

Hello,
can you please help me to get tcpip working?
When I run @sys$startup:tcpip$startup I receive following message:

%TCPIP-I-INFO, TCP/IP Services startup beginning at 8-NOV-2010 22:00:58.92
%TCPIP-I-NORMAL, timezone information verified
%RUN-S-PROC_ID, identification of created process is 00000033
%TCPIP-E-STARTFAIL, failed to start TCP/IP Kernel
-TCPIP-E-INETACPERR, INETACP process error (status = 0000011C)

Of course I have set up tcpip (@sys$manager:tcpip$config) before I've tried to start tcpip.

Hope one can find a solution for this, otherwise I'd have to perform a fresh install.

Best regards

Which TCPIP? On what? There may be more
than one version of TCPIP and/or VMS in the
field these days. Did you follow the
installation instructions?

ALP $ exit %x0000011C
%SYSTEM-F-INSFWSL, insufficient working set limit

Re: Cannot start TCPIP: TCPIP-E-STARTFAIL INETACPERR

$ prod sho prod tcpip

PRODUCT KIT TYPE STATE

DEC VAXVMS TCPIP V5.1-15 Full LP Installed

It worked like a charm in the previous installations.

Do I need to expand the default value of the WSMAX from 1024 to 2048? How do I do that? Maybe by setting a new parameter WSDEF and setting its value to 2048? How do I do that?

SYSGEN> SHOW WSMAX

Re: Cannot start TCPIP: TCPIP-E-STARTFAIL INETACPERR

hpfanat,

WSMAX is a SYSGEN parameter. It can be manipulated manually in SYSGEN or SYSMAN; however the probably is to add it to SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT and re-run AUTOGEN.

Simplifying somewhat, the maximum working set for a process is controlled as the lesser of the user's value contained in the UAF record (viewed and modified using AUTHORIZE) and the system maximum.

Please verify and post both values, as well as the hardware configuration of your system.

So, too old for the on-line docs.

Still wondering. There may be minimum
required values for many parameters, things
to add to MODPARAMS.DAT, and so on, and I
can't reliably guess what they might be.

> [...] How do I do that?

Read and follow the instructions? I know
that that may sound radical, but sometimes it
actually works. With no information about
the system (how much memory, ...), it's hard
to guess what WSMAX (or anything else) ought
to be.

I wish that my psychic powers were strong
enough to let me see what's different on this
system, but they're not.

Re: Cannot start TCPIP: TCPIP-E-STARTFAIL INETACPERR

As stated by others here, WSMAX has implications for the VAX system that do not exist for Alpha. Without knowing memory size, max processes etc. We can't really make any suggestions on how to "fix" this. Clearly the working set for the TCPIP process is too small, the true fix will require knowing more about the context of your system.

Although the default is 1024, 4096 still is quite low.
Do a SHOW MEM to see how much free memory is available.
Depending on the number of processes on the system, increase WSMAX. The maximum used is determined by the processes WSEXTENT, and in case the system uses all its memory, processes are shrinked back to their WSQUOTA.

Wasn't at the end of TCPIP installation a message telling which minimum WSMAX has to be put into MOPDPARAMS.

Re: Cannot start TCPIP: TCPIP-E-STARTFAIL INETACPERR

And BTW, the error may not be WSMAX too low, but the processes WSQUO and/or WSEXTENT.

I think inetacp is running as SYSTEM:
check with MCR AUTHORIZE SHOW SYSTEM
to see WSQUO and WSEXTENT.
On the old VMS 6.2 I have available, WSQUO for system is 4000.

hpfanat,

from your Forum Profile:

I have assigned points to 3 of 17 responses to my questions.

Maybe you can find some time to do some assigning?

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/helptips.do?#33

Mind, I do NOT say you necessarily need to give lots of points. It is fully up to _YOU_ to decide how many. If you consider an answer is not deserving any points, you can also assign 0 ( = zero ) points, and then that answer will no longer be counted as unassigned.
Consider, that every poster took at least the trouble of posting for you!

To easily find your streams with unassigned points, click your own name somewhere.
This will bring up your profile.
Near the bottom of that page, under the caption "My Question(s)" you will find "questions or topics with unassigned points " Clicking that will give all, and only, your questions that still have unassigned postings.
If you have closed some of those streams, you must "Reopen" them to "Submit points". (After which you can "Close" again)

Do not forget to explicitly activate "Submit points", or your effort gets lost again!!

Thanks on behalf of your Forum colleagues.

PS. - nothing personal in this. I try to post it to everyone with this kind of assignment ratio in this forum. If you have received a posting like this before - please do not take offence - none is intended!

PPS. - Zero points for this.

Proost.

Have one on me.
