Re: Concersational or minimum boot on Itanium (OpenVms)

Vms on Alpha or Itanium is Vms !

On the Itanium Vms doc, I see the same as usual

http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/82eft/av-xxxxx-te/av-xxxxx-te.html

Begin the conversational boot by entering the BOOT command in the following format:

BOOT -FLAGS 0,1 [device-name]

For device-name, substitute the device name of the drive from which you want to boot. For example, if the system disk has a device name of DKA400, enter the following command and press the Return key:
>>> BOOT -FLAGS 0,1 DKA400

Enter the following command and press the Return key:
SYSBOOT> SET STARTUP_P1 "MIN"

Enter the following command to continue booting:
SYSBOOT> CONTINUE

quite usual stuff !

Re: Concersational or minimum boot on Itanium (OpenVms)

Hi Fodil,
I have no yet my Itanium Server, so I'm going using my mind.
Itanium use EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) instead SRM. EFI is standard for any operating system.

In console mode, you need select device to boot (FS0 for CD-ROM, map command display list of devices).
Then select VMS directory (cd vms if I remember)
Now in VMS directory you could find two VMS utilities but I don't remember their names.
Usint them you can see devices in SRM mode.
Within SET command you can see the bootflag variable name and SET appropriate value.
To boot use LOAD command of .EFI file.

Sorry but I have to search more detailed documentation to make more precise.

Re: Concersational or minimum boot on Itanium (OpenVms)

I think
setenv VMS_FLAGS 0,1
in the shell

Re: Concersational or minimum boot on Itanium (OpenVms)

Hi guys,

If only it were as simple as an Alpha...

A conversational boot of VMS on an Itanium, goes somewhat like this (your mileage may vary):

Make sure you're connected to & logged in the Management Processor.

The following menu should be present:

MP MAIN MENU:
CO: Console
VFP: Virtual Front Panel
CM: Command Menu
CL: Console Log
SL: Show Event Logs
CSP: Connect to Service Processor
SE: Enter OS Session
HE: Main Help Menu
X: Exit Connection

Select CO (console interface)

MP> CO

As the system starts up, you see boot messages followed by the EFI Boot Manager screen.

EFI Boot Manager ver 1.10 [14.61] Firmware ver 2.20 [4331]

Please select a boot option

EFI Shell [Built-in]
Boot Option Maintenance Menu
System Configuration Menu

Make sure to select the EFI Shell by using the up and/or down arrows.

You then receive the Shell> prompt.

Enter FS0: or the file structured device that has OpenVMS on it.
Shell> fs0:
fs0:\>

Now change the directory containing the OpenVMS initial boot loader by entering cd \efi\boot.

fs0:\> cd \efi\vms
fs0:\efi\vms>

Invoke the initial loader by entering

fs0:\efi\vms> vms_loader.efi -fl 0,1

From here on it's like an Alpha

Good luck,

Kris

Re: Concersational or minimum boot on Itanium (OpenVms)

To add to the excellent description from Kris

You may need to do control-B to get the menu.

To perform an conversational bootstrap from sys0 every time do

set VMS_FLAGS 0,1

at the shell prompt. Use

set VMS_FLAGS

to see what they are set to. I think VMS_FLAGS has to be in uppercase.

Re: Concersational or minimum boot on Itanium (OpenVms)

Kris,
very good help.
Ian,
during training my teacher told me use double quote after set command.
SET VMS_FLAGS "0,1"
Does work without duoble quote?
Fodil,
in FS0:\efi\vms you can see VMS_SHOW command to display device like SRM mode.

Re: Concersational or minimum boot on Itanium (OpenVms)

It appears to work on my rx2600 without the quotes

set vms_flags 0,0

or whatever. However I notice in the HP OpenVMS 8.2EFT Upgrade and Install manual it has the quotes for the example commmand in the "Setting OpenVMS I64 Boot Flags" section.
