Re: DS20e OPOA: Error
how are you connected when you log in ? On the graphics monitor without running DECwindows (i.e. on the bluie screen) - then this would be an expected message.
Logging in using a real terminal or a terminal emulator (e.g. PowerTerm) should not report this. If it's a terminal emulator, maybe you can at least set it to behave like a VT100.

Re: DS20e OPOA: Error
This error happens when the SET TERMINAL command is used in the login procedure. (Either in SYLOGIN.COM or LOGIN.COM in the users login directory) It is only informational and indicates that the system is unable to determine what type of terminal it is that you are logging into. You may be using the graphics terminal (Blue screen) to log in and it is not recognizing it. Either connect a normal terminal (VT type of terminal) to the port or use a PC based terminal emulator configured to emulate a VT type terminal and you should be fine.

Re: DS20e OPOA: Error
actually, it's the SET TERMINAL/INQUIRE command (probably in SYLOGIN.COM), which issues this error message...

Re: DS20e OPOA: Error
This kind of error usually come when VMS couldn't identify your terminal type or Your console is in basic mode.

Re: DS20e OPOA: Error
did you install DECwindows Motif when you installed OpenVMS?
I would have expected the system to have set up all the required SYSGEN parameters during the instalation.
Check that you have a Motif licence installed and loaded with SHOW LICE at the DCL prompt.
You should see a line like
DW-MOTIF DEC 1050 H 0 0.0 (none) (none)
The windows startup is normally run at boot time. You should find the command file
DECW$STARTUP.COM in sys$manager.

Re: DS20e OPOA: Error
I'd use straight SYSEN to reset window_system to 1, and WRITE CURRENT, then reboot to get DECwindows running. I'd then go back and edit MODPARAMS and modify GH memory by setting MIN_GH_RSRVPAGCNT to 512 once the startup is complete
