Detail from OPENVMS 'BACKUP' Utility
to refresh our test server with data from our
production box.
I proceeded to restore the backup to the test
box, but it omitted a 2.4GB file. The issue is
that the backup log showed no problem and actually restored two much smaller files to the same directory. I found out about this issue only because the user informed me the file was missing. The file was on the backup and I successfully restored it.
I believe the restore originally failed because there was not enough space available.
Is there an option within the backup utility that would provide more detail besides turning on logging ??? Here's a sample of how I restored that directory.........
backup/log 'TPDRIVE'savf02.bck/save DISK2:[*...]/own=orig/replace ! DISK2:[PAG.DATA...]*.*;
Thanks!

Read the help to check that /REPLACE
is what you want.
Purely Personal Opinion

Re: Detail from OPENVMS 'BACKUP' Utility
why it didn't restore that 2.4GB file. There's no reference to that file in the log at all. I'm just trying to understand why
'backup' didn't show an error during the restore with logging 'on' ???
I did want /replace because I didn't
want to keep any pre-existing files.
What am I missing here ???
Thanks!

Re: Detail from OPENVMS 'BACKUP' Utility
did record the error, but when you're looking through thousands of lines of output,
those errors could be hard to find.
Uh boy!

Re: Detail from OPENVMS 'BACKUP' Utility
$ SEARCH logfile "-F-","-E-"
should certainly limit the no. of lines displayed and point you faster to the real error.
