HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

I know I am not alone in trying this, maybe someone could help.

We have managed to build an OpenVMS guest on a HP-UX 11.31 host, the system is running VMS 8.3-1H1, however no network devices are visible. I have added them in (from the documentation) using "hpvmnet" first, but they are not visible when booted.

The system is a rx6600 (8 core, 1.6/24MB, 16GB) with several dual 1Gbe interfaces.

Re: HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

Daniel,

as far as I'm aware, you need the 'next' release of OpenVMS (expected to be caleld V8.4) for support of running OpenVMS as a guest on HPVM.

Re: HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

OpenVMS I64 V8.4 is the first release that HP expects and intends to be supported as a guest, based on the OpenVMS roadmap and various published reports.

Contact HP directly if you'd like to get into this earlier, and see if they are in a position to discuss this topic.

Re: HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

I am aware that 8.4 seems to the first proper release, but when will that be out??? It was promised for last year!

I played with VMS running as a HPVM last summer in Vegas, and things suggest that it will work (kind of).

I have already had to jump through hoops to get here, where I needed to find three hidden/undocumented "tunables" that go into the config file.

The annoying thing is, VMS works a treat, but with no network :-(

Re: HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

Dan,

OpenVMS V8.4 has been delayed and is now expected in H1 2010 - according to the current OpenVMS Roadmap.

Tiny little details like 'network adapters not working' could just be caused by lack of support.

Re: HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

I like the phrase "tiny little problems"! I was under the impression that the delay was more with the Tukwila support, added to the extra pressure of full compliance with IPv6 and IPCI.

The whole idea was to test-bed this as a proof of concept on a rx6600, and then use some spare cells in a rx8640. Not a good start on the proof of concept!

Oh well, someone may have an answer. Apart from the steep learning curve, its a nice approach to virtualising VMS. And its ever so secure, as no bugger can get on to it!

Ask HP. Those folks that know the official (internal) schedule and particularly those folks that know the odds on meeting that current (internal) schedule are not typically permitted communicate that knowledge here.

You've already conclusively proven that this is either going to be an enablement ECO kit or a new OpenVMS release before its ready to ship, after all; that V8.3-1H1 does not operate correctly nor sufficiently with the current software and documentation. And HP has stated "new release".

HP has occasionally involved customers as field test sites for specific features, which is another potential outcome of the "ask HP" approach here.

Re: HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

I think you will also need a later, as yet unreleased, version of HPVM as well.

Why are you wanting to use HPVM?

Re: HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

I wanted to move some non-production systems from their own servers to virtual servers, so the servers could be reused for production. Simple idea, but its not looking too promising.

Especially when I have two cells in a fully spec'd rx8640 that would have been an ideal VM host. I can't believe that they are pushing back v8.4 until next year.

Re: HPVM Guest on VMS 8.3-1H1

hello,

my bL860c works, I was told to add

SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]SYS$USER_CONFIG.DAT;

! Intel 82540 LOM, HPVM 82540 emulated
device = "i82540 LOM (Gigabit Ethernet)"
name = EI
driver = SYS$EI1000
adapter = PCI
id = 0x100E8086
boot_flags = HW_CTRL_LTR, UNIT_0
flags = BOOT, NETWORK
end_device

+ reboot => EIxx devices ...
may be it could work for you ...
