Any chance you have a PCI-Express backplane? I haven't worked with them, but this is from < http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-8644/5991-8644.pdf >...

If you purchased a new system with OpenVMS Factory Installed Software (FIS), some of the required patches
may already be installed on your system. Consult the release notes on the system disk in file:
SYS$HELP:FIS.RELEASE_NOTES

If you are upgrading an existing server to use the new PCI-Express I/O backplane, install the OpenVMS
patches before upgrading the server's firmware and installing the new backplane. OpenVMS customers do
not need to re-install the operating system. Some OpenVMS device names may change due to the different
order in which I/O cards are discovered and named.

If you are installing OpenVMS V8.3 on a new rx3600 or rx6600 server with the PCI-Express I/O backplane, you
may not be able to boot the V8.3 installation media and install OpenVMS with some I/O card configurations.
See the following section for temporary workarounds that will allow you to install OpenVMS and install the
required patches.

Re: How to install OpenVMS V8.3 on HP RX6600

This looks familiar.

Dig up the system installation guide for the rx6600 box off of the HP documentation site http://docs.hp.com or dig around under the HP product support area, and follow the section of the hardware installation that covers the controller setup requirements; this looks like a bog-standard installation problem that happens with these boxes. The console firmware is AFAIK not capable of a traditional default install sequence, because the underlying controllers are not configured or not correctly configured; the hardware and firmware and installation environments of these boxes are not particularly integrated.

Re: How to install OpenVMS V8.3 on HP RX6600

From what I can see, the above discussion appears to have come to a solution.

Did that approach and that solution not work for your configuration?

You're here, so probably not. Since it didn't work, what (else) happened different than the above sequence?

What's different about your hardware or your configuration?
