How to see what are the services running in Open VMS machine?

Can someone tell me what are the commands to see what are the services that are running in Open VMS 7.2-1 Alpha DS 10 serverand how to add a process as as service and stop the same to run as service?

Re: How to see what are the services running in Open VMS machine?

It sounds to me like you are applying Windows terminology to an OpenVMS system. Services (as exist on Windows systems) can be implemented as either batch jobs or detached processes. To see what is running on a system inits entirety, use the SHOW SYSTEM command. All processes will be listed (similar to the process listing in the Windows task manager).

To best suggest the methodology to resolve your issue, a more detailed description of what you are trying to resolve would help. Please add some details.

Thanks,

Re: How to see what are the services running in Open VMS machine?

There's no analog to this "services" model on VMS.

It's all manually configured, with various pieces separately installed, and it's almost all started with explicit DCL (shell-level) commands added to and issued from SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM via editing, and with other analogous startup files, and with manual configuration file edits, and via the TCP/IP Services tools, and that's viewed and configured via the TCPIP$CONFIG tool.

Given your phrasing, I'm left to infer you're unfamiliar with OpenVMS. If that's the case, you'll want to start by reading the OpenVMS User's Guide and the OpenVMS System Manager's manuals. OpenVMS is wildly different from what you're accustomed to, and (if you attempt to apply your knowledge of the "services" concept from other operating systems), you're going to fail. Completely. Yes, it's _that_ different.

The User's Guide and the System Manager's Manual are available via the VMS documentation shelf starting at:

http://www.hp.com/go/openvms/doc

When you're done with those three manuals (skim the second of the two system management volumes for now), the next document you'll be reading will likely be the TCP/IP Services management manual. That's at the same starting URL, but in the TCP/IP shelf.

That, or attend some classroom training on VMS, depending on how you prefer to learn.

Re: How to see what are the services running in Open VMS machine?

Hi,

As Dan said, use $ SHOW SYSTEM command. This command displays status information about all the process running in the machine. Check the online help for more details and explanation. $ HELP SHOW SYSTEM
