Issues with queues on SMTP

On the following system with version below

TCPIP> sh ver

HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Alpha Version V5.4 - ECO 2
on a AlphaStation DS10 617 MHz running OpenVMS V7.3-2

The SMTP queue will not start - there are no logs to review and starting the mail service after queue deletion results in the queues being created but they cannot be used ?

Re: Issues with queues on SMTP

I would have tried

$ @sys$startup:tcpip$smtp_shutdown
$ @sys$startup:tcpip$smtp_startup

as a start.

Re: Issues with queues on SMTP

Have you checked the logfiles on SYS$SPECIFIC:[TCPIP$SMTP] ?

You can turn on a higher LOG_LEVEL to get more information in the logfiles.

"Use the TCPIP$SMTP_LOG_LEVEL logical, as described in Section 18.5. " Check the link in the previous post.

I know nothing, but I'd probably start with
something like one of the many newer TCPIP
ECO kits, and/or the latest big UPDATE blob.
(16 seems to be current.) Around here:

alp $ tcpip show version

HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Alpha Version V5.4 - ECO 7

What did you do to break this, anyway?

Re: Issues with queues on SMTP

Use $ TCPIP SHOW VERS/ALL and check the versions of TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR and TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT.

It looks like you may have a old/wrong version of either one of those files. Any versions of those file in SYS$SPECIFIC: ?

Re: Issues with queues on SMTP

I was away a couple of hours teaching Curling to local highschool students.

I agree with Steven and Volker......

Check the versions of

SYS$SYSTEM:TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT.EXE
SYS$LIBRARY:TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR.EXE

and most important....HOW did this problem start ?

Normally you don't run TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT.EXE manually, but if you do.

$ MCR TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT
%SYSTEM-F-IVLOGNAM, invalid logical name

Or, around here:

ALP $ MCR TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT
Tried to insert in uninitialized list.
Tried to insert in uninitialized list.
Tried to insert in uninitialized list.

But it's still not complaining about
incompatible run-time stuff.

(Good thing they fixed that program.)

Re: Issues with queues on SMTP

Please try to isolate the problem first instead of just 'applying patches' ...

If - for example - there is a bad file in SYS$SPECIFIC; you won't solve that problem with installing a patch.

$ TCPIP SHOW VERS/ALL will list the version and link date of all TCPIP images, just find the data for TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR and TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT and post it here.

Also do a DIR SYS$SYSTEM:TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT/DATE and SYS$LIBRARY:TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR/DATE and provide that information as well.

We may be able to find out, if those 2 images match your TCPIP ECO level.

Re: Issues with queues on SMTP

It looks like you have a bogey in SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSLIB].......

You have two versions of TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR.EXE. The file in SYS$SYSROOT has a date from 2008.

Try to rename SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSLIB]TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR.EXE to something else and try to start SMTP again.

Re: Issues with queues on SMTP

There is a version of TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR.EXE in SYS$SPECIFIC:[SYSLIB] - it does NOT belong there and it's most likely the reason for your problem.

The data of the one in SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB] at least exactly matches the date of TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT

As a quick check, just rename the one in SYS$SPECIFIC and try MC TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT. If you don't get the %IMGACT-F-SYMVECMIS error, try to start SMTP again.

Volker.

Re: Issues with queues on SMTP

According to the TCPIP V5.4 ECO 2 release notes:

ECO D 5-APR-2004 Alpha

Problem...

Deliverables:

TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR.EXE V5.4-15D

THIS is the correct one, which matches your TCPIP$SMTP_SYMBIONT.EXE. Your bad TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR.EXE is V5.4-15 !
