MAIL & MIME Utility not working

When I run either MAIL or MIME at the $ prompt I get this......

Eddy02$ mail
%LIB-F-SIGNO_ARG, signal with no arguments
Eddy02$

I am running OpenVMS 8.4 on rx2800 integrity server i2

TCPIP V5.7 ECO4

Thanks

Re: MAIL & MIME Utility not working

Robert,

   The first thing I'd check is symbols and logical names

$ SHOW SYMBOL MAIL*

$ SHOW LOGICAL MAIL*

if that doesn't point to the problem, check the images in SYS$SYSTEM

Re: MAIL & MIME Utility not working

thanks

I have a working system - our PRODUCTION kit - identical in terms of hardware

its MAIL & MIME utilities are working well.

Logicals on both machines.........

(LNM$SYSTEM_TABLE)

  "MAIL$PROTOCOL_SMTP" = "TCPIP$SMTP_MAILSHR"
  "MAIL$SYSTEM_FLAGS" = "16"
  "MAILSHR_AV" = "MAILSHR"

executbale images on both machines identical

Directory SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]

DECW$MAIL.EXE;1           31/32        8-APR-2010 01:44:33.83
MAIL.EXE;1               643/656      30-MAR-2010 19:48:37.15
MAIL_SERVER.EXE;1         89/96       30-MAR-2010 19:48:33.80

   That's half of what was requested.  Also:

      SHOW SYMBOL MIME*

or, in desperation:

      SHOW SYMBOL M*

   I might try something like:

      mcr mail

   Note that MAIL and MIME have very little in common (other than
beginning with "M"), so I'd guess that any problem which affects both is
more likely to be some misconfiguration than a fundamental problem with
both programs.

   How many users experience this behavior?

Re: MAIL & MIME Utility not working

thanks steve

Eddy02$ SHOW SYMBOL MIME*
%DCL-W-UNDSYM, undefined symbol - check validity and spelling
Eddy02$
Eddy02$ show log mime*

(LNM$PROCESS_TABLE)

(LNM$JOB_8976B4C0)

(SERVER_1014284009)

(LNM$GROUP_000001)

(LNM$SYSTEM_TABLE)

(LNM$SYSCLUSTER_TABLE)

(DECW$LOGICAL_NAMES)
%SHOW-S-NOTRAN, no translation for logical name MIME*

Eddy02$ mcr mail
%LIB-F-SIGNO_ARG, signal with no arguments

All users have the same problem

thanks

Re: MAIL & MIME Utility not working

Please enter the proper and expected command MAIL to activate MAIL.

Please post the output of SHOW SYMBOL MCR and SHOW LOGICAL MCR to see if that's going somewhere unexpected.

Also please post the output of the SHOW LOGICAL DCL$PATH command, to see where image activation is going, if not to the standard places.

Also please post the output of the command:

DIRECTORY /FILE SYS$SYSDEVICE:[000000]VMS$COMMON.DIR,SYS$SYSDEVICE:[SYS*]SYSCOMMON.DIR

FWIW: The MCR Monitor Console Routine attempts to activate the compatibility mode command interface and the image activation path that was last used with RSX-11M.   If RSX-11M is not installed, MCR does work in cases beyond RSX-11M compatibility mode, it's deliberately under-documented and is usually best avoided.

FWIW: when you're troubleshooting odd behaviors, it's best to follow the VMS documentation directly.    I'd be surprised if there's an "MCR MAIL" anywhere in the VMS manuals, but anything's possible.

Re: MAIL & MIME Utility not working

You could also try:

$ SET PROC/PRIV=CMK

$ SET WATCH FILE/CLASS=MAJ    ! enables XQP logging

$ MAIL

...

$ SET WATCH FILE/CLASS=NOMAJOR   ! to disable XQP logging

Then compare the output with a working system.

Volker.
