I'm running the Personal Alpha emulator + VMS 8.3 on a PC.
I can solve DNS via the routing param I gave with TCPIP$CONFIG.
My ADSL router address is 192.168.1.1
Emulator is 192.168.1.13 (fixed), local PC is 192.168.1.20 (fixed)
I can do FTP from the PC to VMS, I can ping from VMS to the router, I can ping everyone else on the Internet but I cannot ping the host PC (real issue when you want to do a $ set display/create...)
This used to work fine a few months ago.
What did miss pls ?
I checked my firewall and found noting relevant.
Thanks

Re: No access to HOST from emulated VMS
look at the MAC addresses being presented to OpenVMS (SDA> SHOW LAN/DEV=ESA/FULL) and the MAC address seen on Windows (ipconfig /all). If you can FTP from PC to VMS, check ARP -A afterwards from PC and OpenVMS (needs @SYS$MANAGER:TCPIP$DEFINE_COMMANDS first).
In my case, Windows reports the 'real' IP address of the LAN interface, which is being run in shared mode by PersonalAlpha, as: 00-10-18-18-12-c8
OpenVMS sees this LAN interface as: 00-11-19-19-3-c9
This must be the Alpha NDIS5 driver playing games with the MAC adress...

Re: No access to HOST from emulated VMS
there once was a description on the emulatorsinternational.com site on how to use the Microsoft Loopback Adapter, but that page is gone. I never had to use that, but you may be able to figure out, how to set that up and then use one of those 'loopback LAN' devices from your PersonalAlpha and the other one from Windows.

Re: No access to HOST from emulated VMS
the page about PersonalAlpha dn loopback driver is still in the Google cache !
Search in Google for 'personalalpha microsoft loopback'
and look up the 2nd entry found via the 'in cache' link ...

Re: No access to HOST from emulated VMS
I connect to PC from P.Alpha using bridge address (in your case 192.168.1.14)

Re: No access to HOST from emulated VMS
Make sure your PC firewall isn't blocking ICMP (ping). Perhaps that is the problem.

Re: No access to HOST from emulated VMS
So, I then tried to ping the Tabletop from the laptop : no answer.
So the problem is within the Tabletop security policy.
I'll keep you informed.
Thanks for your time.

Well, it took sometime to find where to activate "ICMP". Actually, it is in the advanced section of the Firewall mgr.
Thanks John. Ten points. :-)
