Older Alpha server and Firmware question

If SRM V6.7 firmware release notes state that V6.0 is the last FW available for a AS1200 then that means what it says, right ?
Cannot put V6.7 on AS1200 ? Latest FW for AS1200 is stated at 6.0.
I although could apply other recent FW like FW for KGPSA Fibre Controller that is on CD .

Just looking for a confirmation from the more experienced..

Thanks !

Re: Older Alpha server and Firmware question

Maximum firmware revision for the DS-KGPSA-CA fibre channel adapter on an AlphaServer 1200, 4000, 4100 is V3.82A1. There can be problems with FW V3.91A1 in some situations.

Re: Older Alpha server and Firmware question

This server has KGPSA-BC which is noted with 3.20x7 in the release notes.

Where did you see/find the 3.82A1 note ? or is that from experience ?

Re: Older Alpha server and Firmware question

It is from a customer advisory which does not apply to the KGPSA-BC.

Re: Older Alpha server and Firmware question

Just curious.. Thanks for the info.

I do not suppose you know how to get 3.20x7 installed on some KGPSA-BC adapters in a AS1200 using the AS1200 FW update util ? The update util for this version does not do this by itself as it looks like it is too old and unaware of KGPSA controllers even though there are notes about them in the readme file ???

Re: Older Alpha server and Firmware question

what it means is that the V6.7 and later CDs will not contain any later firmward for the AS 1200. In fact they often drop firmware nolonger being updated from the CD in later CDs and you have to get it from the web site.

The firmware available for interface cards is seperate

Re: Older Alpha server and Firmware question

Tim,
you need to do the update via ARC/AlphaBIOS.

Firmware and instructions are here:
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/readmes/archive/utility/

See 'identify.txt' and 'dnldrdme.txt'.

Re: Older Alpha server and Firmware question

Hi Tim,

the latest firmware (also if it is no longer on the CD can always be found at

ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/index.html

(Both the address and the design are a real blast from the past btw ;-)

Honestly speaking, I would tend to stick with the FW version for the controler that matches the FW for your system. These are tested together and should work. Unless you have a specific problem you need to solve I would not upgrade the controller. While engeneering does test plenty of combinations it is simply impossible to test all possible combinations of Server/Cards/OS/FW, so there is a good chance you end up with an untested combination.

Greetings, Martin
