Open3D with Permedia-2 videocard

Is there a chance to get 3D with Permedia2 videocasrd?
should I have a license? Patch?

On OpenVMS v8.2 for Alpha based systems:

1) Install OpenVMS Operating systems and ensure that you answer "YES" to the question about installing support files for DECwindows Motif. You can also select "YES" when prompted to install DECwindows at this time and it will be installed along with the OS. All Graphics support drivers for all supported Graphics cards will be installed with the OS.

2) After the OpenVMS installation, you next need to install your OpenVMS 8.2 license and a DW-Motif License.

3) After installing the licenses, and if you didn't install DECwindows Motif with the OS, you will need to install DECwindows Motif v1.5 that is included on the OpenVMS CDROM.

4) Once you have installed OpenVMS, DECwindows and your licenses you are finished as far as graphics support is concerned. This is because beginning with OpenVMS 8.2, you no longer need to install the Open3d Software or the Open3d license.

A.1 Compaq Open3D Layered Product Not Supported in Version 8.2

For OpenVMS Version 8.2, the layered product Compaq Open3D for OpenVMS Alpha V4.9B and earlier versions is not supported. However, it will continue to be supported on OpenVMS Versions 6.2 and 7.3-2 under Mature Product Support (MPS). This product should not be confused with the Open3D product that is integrated into OpenVMS Version 8.2 and supports new cards such as the PowerStorm 300, PowerStorm 350, and ATI RADEON. The product that is no longer supported is 3D support for PixelVision, FFB, TGA, and TGA2-based graphics in releases following OpenVMS Version 7.3-2. See Section 6.18 for a related release note.

If the unsupported Open3D product is installed on your system, you might encounter problems. For example, the DECwindows display server might hang in a CPU-intensive loop. If Open3D is already installed on your current version of OpenVMS and you plan to upgrade to OpenVMS Version 8.2, you must first ensure that none of the following graphics controller boards are installed on your target system:

a.. ZLX-M Series (PixelVision): ZLX-M1 (PMAGC-AA), ZLX-M2 (PMAGC-BA)
b.. ZLX-L Series (PixelVision Lite): ZLX-L1 (PMAGC-DA), ZLX-L2 (PMAGC-EA)
c.. ZLXp-L Series (PixelVision PCI): ZLXp-L1 (PBXGC-A), ZLXp-L2 (PBXGC-B)

Starting with OpenVMS Version 8.2, the 3D graphics display feature is licensed with the operating system for both AlphaServers and Integrity servers. Therefore, the Open3D license is not available for Version 8.2 of OpenVMS.

6.14 Open3D Graphics Licensing Change

The 3D graphics display capability has traditionally been licensed separately from the OpenVMS operating system. Since its initial offering, the Open3D layered product has required a separately orderable license. When Open3D software began shipping as part of the OpenVMS operating system, the 3D graphics display feature continued to be a separately licensed capability. An example of this licensing is Open3D licensing to support 3D graphics display with the 3X-PBXGG-AA ATI RADEON 7500 PCI 2D/3D graphics adapter.

Starting with OpenVMS Version 8.2, the 3D graphics display feature is licensed with the operating system for both AlphaServers and Integrity servers. Therefore, the Open3D license is not available for Version 8.2 of OpenVMS. Previous versions of OpenVMS still require the Open3D license to be installed on the system for 3D display operation.

HP will continue to support 3D device drivers shipped with OpenVMS Version 7.3-2 under standard contract or Mature Product Support, depending on your support agreement. Device drivers for the following adapters have shipped with Version 7.3-2 of OpenVMS:

a.. PowerStorm 300 and 350 PCI graphics adapters (SN-PBXGD)
b.. ATI RADEON 7500 PCI and AGP graphics adapters (3X-PBXGG)

These adapters will continue to run 3D graphics display under OpenVMS Version 8.2 but will no longer require a license. In addition, the following 2D graphics adapters continue to be supported with OpenVMS Version 8.2:

a.. ELSA Gloria Synergy (SN-PBXGK)
b.. 3Dlabs Oxygen VX1 (SN-PBXGF)

The ATI RADEON 7500 PCI graphics adapter will be supported on OpenVMS I64 Version 8.2 in the near future. Testing is currently in progress. An announcement will be posted on the following website when support for this graphics card is available:

6.15 PowerStorm 300/350 PCI Graphics Support for OpenVMS

Open3D License No Longer Checked


Starting with OpenVMS Version 8.2, the license to use 3D (OpenGL) support is included as part of the OpenVMS license. See Section 6.14 for details.

Defining the DECW$OPENGL_PROTOCOL Logical


When you run a 3D graphics application and display output to a system with a PowerStorm 350/300 graphics card, you must make sure the DECW$OPENGL_PROTOCOL logical is defined as follows on the system on which you are running the application:

Problem Fixed


Previously, the P350 would sometimes fail to reinitialize properly on session exit.

This problem has been fixed by two modifications:

a.. A call to vmsCloseScreen has been added to the device-specific riCloseScreen function (which is called, for example, at CDE session exit), causing the channel to the GB device to be deassigned and allowing the driver to reinitialize the board properly.
b.. The pixel converter resynchronization algorithm in the device driver has been greatly improved.

Is it mean, that Permedia-2 (ELSA Gloria )
is 2-D only card?
I was sure it's an 3D card...

As far as the Open3D SPD 4.9B (possibly not the newest version, but the only one I could find) is concerned, the PowerStorm 4D10 and 4D10T series are 2D cards.

In addition to the (lack of) references in the SPD, my reading of the cited V8.2 text indicates that the card was and remains 2D, as well.
