OpenVMS backup over TCP/IP connection
There use to be a software called Remote Tape Facility that will allow a client node to use locally a remote tape drive. The software work over DECnet.
Please advise.

I don't do it, but I hear that it's possible
to run DECnet over a TCP/IP network:

Re: OpenVMS backup over TCP/IP connection
From David Jones' note
"It should build on any Alpha running 7.2 or higher with DECC 6.0, but most development has been at 8.2.
The code is an update of Wolfgang Moeller's old remote tape driver using TCP/IP instead of DECnet (ZT_DRIVER.MAR is virtually unchanged). I use the software to backup my AS800 at home to a 300GB disk drive connected to a Windows PC."

Re: OpenVMS backup over TCP/IP connection
One concern here is that you can have critical security information traveling over the WAN, though BACKUP encryption can certainly address this potential exposure.
There's an unsupported pass-through tool (for DECnet) in the FAQ.
And there are remote storage library facilities and storage archival tools around. The ABS product, for instance.

Re: OpenVMS backup over TCP/IP connection
1. Currently running DECnet IV not OSI (haven't found a good reason to upgrade).
2. DECnet's protocol is filtered by the Switches, so there is no DECnet between sites.
I'll try to do some testing in the next few days and post my findings.
Thanks to all.

Now 2. gives You a good reason to upgrade to DECnetPlus: with DECnet-over-IP You can continue to use backup to remote (decnet-) saveset.

Re: OpenVMS backup over TCP/IP connection
- Did you want to directly write to tape on the remote site/side or is a saveset fine?
- If a saveset is fine, then just use an NFS
presented device?
Hein.
