OpenVMS backup over TCP/IP connection

I currently manage 7 sites with AXP severs, all connect via a TCP/IP in a WAN network. Is there a way and/or product that would allow me to execute OpenVMS backups over the network so I can use my Central AXP server as a repository for all remote sites?

There use to be a software called Remote Tape Facility that will allow a client node to use locally a remote tape drive. The software work over DECnet.

Please advise.

DECnet-Plus operating over the IP transport and BACKUP can together provide this. Unmodified. Transparently. No added products or licenses. Supported.

One concern here is that you can have critical security information traveling over the WAN, though BACKUP encryption can certainly address this potential exposure.

There's an unsupported pass-through tool (for DECnet) in the FAQ.

And there are remote storage library facilities and storage archival tools around. The ABS product, for instance.

Two additional pieces of information based of the replies received:

1. Currently running DECnet IV not OSI (haven't found a good reason to upgrade).

2. DECnet's protocol is filtered by the Switches, so there is no DECnet between sites.

I'll try to do some testing in the next few days and post my findings.

Now 2. gives You a good reason to upgrade to DECnetPlus: with DECnet-over-IP You can continue to use backup to remote (decnet-) saveset.

- Did you want to directly write to tape on the remote site/side or is a saveset fine?

- If a saveset is fine, then just use an NFS
presented device?

We have used a product called TAPESYS from Software Partners (www.softwarepartners.com)for years. It's a tape and backup management app. and works with a remote backup component called THRUWAY. It runs over TCP/IP. It's certainly not fast but it works.
