Operator Console

In old system (Alpha server 4100,Elsa display card,Openvms7.1-1H1),the programs run OK.After the DECWindows startup,the program send some information to Operator Console(OPA0:),and display on monitor.It can return to DECWindow mode via CTRL+F2.
In new system(Alpha ES45,Radeon 7500 display card,Openvms7.3-2),the same programs,running OK,but the monitor can't display the information.When the information sent,the DECWindow hang,can't change to Operator console.
Is there something wrong?

Re: Operator Console

Looks like a minor difference in set-up, and I'd likely fix the older box rather than worrying about the new box.

The shared window and the CTRL/F2 stuff is mildly nasty and gnarly part of OpenVMS and DECwindows and the console drivers, and is not entirely reliable or stable. It's certainly not the preferred interface.

On the older AlphaServer 4100 series system, you can and probably should disable the use of the workstation as the operator console. Either disable this stuff to OPA0: entirely, or re-route the stuff to the Alpha operator console.

On the newer AlphaServer ES45 system, the system has probably been configured to use the serial line as the console, or the system has been set up to disable operator messages on the console, or the system has been set to use the Alpha Console mechanism available in current OpenVMS and current DECwindows.

On the Integrity system, the workstation is not the operator console; it's not OPA0:. You won't get startup messages or other such routed to the workstation.

For the underpinnings of the control of OPCOM messages, see SYLOGICALS.TEMPLATE. Also see the REPLY/DISABLE command discussed in the FAQ:

DEFINE/USER SYS$COMMAND OPA0
REPLY/DISABLE

The OPC$ logical names are the preferred approach, but the older approach based on the REPLY/DISABLE also works.

There are a whole pile of discussions on the console in the OpenVMS FAQ. The master FAQ URL is at:

Re: Operator Console

Today,I stop the DECWindow process(stop/id=decw$server_id).The program running OK,also can output the messsage to the Operator Console.
So,I think it may be the problem of DECWindow.
The following is decw$server_0_error.log:

Re: Operator Console

The old video card is S3 Trio64/32,the new video card is Radeon 7500.
For testing,I change the old video card to the ES45,Openvms7.3-2,the program running OK!!!Also can output the message to Operator Console,Press Ctrl+F2 return to Decwindow.
Obviously,it is the problem of VIDEO CARD.
The following is the DECW$server log of old card in new environment(running OK).

Re: Operator Console

Have you got all the patches (especially the graphics ones)? Had issues with the radeon some time ago which were resolved with the installation of the graphics patch.

Re: Operator Console

Is the console a window (or just the old output to the graphics terminal). With the radeon we ended up:

Forcing the pixel depth to 8 (legacy task problem) and enabling the console window

DECW$PRIVATE_APPS_SETUP.COM;1

$ DECW$CONSOLE_SELECTION == "WINDOW"

DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM;1

$ DEFINE/EXECUTIVE/SYSTEM/NOLOG DECW$SERVER_PIXEL_DEPTH 8,8,8,8,8,8,8,8
$ DECW$CONSOLE_SELECTION == "ENABLE"
$ DECW$SERVER_DEFAULT_VISUAL_CLASS == "3"
$ !
$ ! DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM

(note the above is just the beginning of the file)

Re: Operator Console

First: there is nothing wrong here.

Most of that recent posting was a normal system shutdown.

Digging through all of what was posted, I see a reference to the use STOP/ID issued against a DECwindows process. Bad idea. Don't do that. That has the potential to cause stability or reliability problems. DECwindows and most system components don't generally respond well to having processes unexpectedly deleted.

As for CTRL/F2 and using the old split-screen console, that's only the default for older releases, it's not reliable, and it's been deliberately disabled by default.

The replacement: use the operator console mechanism specified in my previous post. (For details on the DECwindows console window, see the decw$private_apps_setup.com DECwindows startup file.)

The "new" console window application works better, is far more reliable, is more convenient, and doesn't derail your input should a breakpoint or such hit while you're typing.

The following text is a direct quote from the OpenVMS Engineer that has been maintaining this area and many of the graphics drivers:

"BTW - I recommend you NOT use OPA0 when using graphics as the console, and by default for a long time, the default is to set OPA0 /NOBROADCAST when you are on a graphics head. Instead, you can look at using the console window (see decw$private_apps_setup.com). The graphics console is unsynchronized with the X11 drawing, and there can be lots of problems with non-emergency output to the console while running X11."

Loosely translated, that means the OPA0: console output on the graphics display doesn't work reliably, and can't reasonably be made to work reliably.
