PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

Hi there!

we've a problem with the Polycenter Console Manager 1.6-201.

The PCM is not able to dearchive data for extraction!!!

"...

Failed to dearchive log data for system EZK20 - Unable to open archive directory"

I put an example archive-log and the try to extract in the attachement.

I remember that the problem first occurs after a few weeks/month as we'd upgraded from VMS 6.2 to 7.3-1!

Hope you can help me.

Re: PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

Is the protection on the archive directory and the directory into which the files are to be written OK?

If you have security audits for file access failures then they may be of help.

Re: PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

Yes sure, cause he can archive them in the further step (as I logged in the attachement).

And it seems that he IS NOT accessing the file:

EZK99$RTA2:SYS > set watch file /class=major
EZK99$RTA2:SYS > cons extra ezk20 /sin=y

Re: PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

Hi,

Check for the logical console$archive. If this is missing or not correct then define as follows:

DEFINE/NOLOG/SYSTEM/TABLE=CONSOLE$LOGICAL_NAMES CONSOLE$ARCHIVE EZK99_D1:[CONSOLE.ARCHIVE]

HTH,
Thanks & regards,
Lokesh

Re: PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

Yes it's there.
Otherwise the set watch output wouldn't show the ARCHIVE.DIR:

%XQP, Thread #0, Access ARCHIVE.DIR;1 (18,1,0) Status: 00000001
%XQP, Thread #0, Final status: 3A000001

Re: PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

Hi Lokesh,

you were 50% right.

the Logical was set false (to a directory, which doesn't exist).

But after I set it right and Restart PCM, the CONS extraxt fails the same way.
Now it is: CONSOLE$ROOT:[ARCHIVE].

Seems that the Logical is not in use, cause we saw that as the logical was set false, the extract looked to the right directory!

Re: PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

Kuddel,

V1.6-201 is pretty old. There was at least one patch newer, V1.6-412, for the V1.6 release. The release notes for this release don't explicitly claim to fix the issues you're seeing with extract after archive, but the newer patch may help. I was under the impression that there were some significant issues with archiving and extract/review due to some Y2K concerns with V1.6.

If you can locate that particular release, it might help...

I know that it exists, but I never found it in the whole www!!!

Re: PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

Of course, the standard recommendation should be to get the latest product through CA.
However, if you have OpenVMS support through HP, I believe that the V1.6 ECOs are available. I've checked to see if they were posted, but none of the FTP sites I'm able to search have that particular kit. You would be looking for something with a name like: CONSOLE412016

The V1.7 release was after the product was transferred to CA, so requires different licensing. The absolute current release is in the V3.x range now, I think...

Re: PCM Probs: Error when try tro extraxt archived data

re: the bad logical name

The wrong tranlation of the logical name CONSOLE$ARCHIVE did not matter in this case, as the archive directory was set in CONSOLE_CFG.DAT to a specific device and directory:

PCM Edit> show archive
...
Archive Summary
---------------
Archive hours = 24
Archive location = EZK99_D1:[Console.ARCHIVE]

The default for Archive location would be CONSOLE$ARCHIVE. If the default would have been used, the bad logical would have mattered.
