PJL - how to send command and receive data from Printer?

hi, I'm looking for a way to retrieve printer status from HP printers : eg: low toner, out of paper, etc.
I tried using WMI from windows API and visual basic and it didn't get the printer status correctly. Is there any way I can do it using printer language or any other idea?

If you're using a Microsoft Windows API, you
might get more useful responses if you ask
in a Windows forum, rather than in this VMS
forum.

Also, in general, with a description like "I
tried something and it didn't work", it's
difficult for anyone to offer much specific
help.
