SFTP

Hello, how are people doing SFTP these days? Is port forwarding using SSH a preferred way of running SFTP or is there a product? Are there any disadvantages to port forwarding? I am assuming the remote system must have SSH.

Re: SFTP

which TCP/IP product are you using on your VMS system? Some have secure file transfer facilities.

Re: SFTP

tcp/ip services for VMS v5.4 has sftp and scp. See
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/732final/aa-rvbua-te/aa-rvbua-te.html

There is this add on for earler versions
http://www.process.com/tcpip/ssh.html

And both stacks from process.com

Re: SFTP

Ian, thanks, this question relates to HP's TCPIP 5.4, It sounds like port redirection is a simple solution are there any drawbacks that anyone is aware of for doing this vs SFTP? Thanks in advance.

Re: SFTP

why not use the scp or sftp commands rather than port forwarding?

Re: SFTP

I see some fixes in V5.4 ECO 2 for ssh so it would be worth installing that.

Re: SFTP

Ian, will do on the eco, i am thinking that with port forwarding i would still be running ftp and have the luxury of all the commands people are familiar with. But i do not know if there are any drawbacks to this method.

Re: SFTP

theorectically I think there is some additional system overhead with port forwarding a ftp connection however I can also see your point in that the people overhead may be lower (and people are more expensive. Although the command line mode in sftp looks similar to the command line mode in the ftp client.

Hopefully somebody who does secure filetransfers regularly will reply with their own experiance.
