VMS 7.2-2, TCPIP V5.x, 100% CPU (race?), login via TELNET gives garbage

Hi folks,

I'm sure I remember a race condition on one of the TCPIP 5.x versions that produced these symptoms - system is running fine then suddenly hits 100% CPU when it typically never gets that high, and if you try and login via telnet you get the screenshot I've attached. I'm currently finding out which version of TCPIP is running.

The system becomes unuseable and has to be rebooted.

Cheers!

Adrian,

yes, I've seen this a well. Was fixed in some TCPIP patch. Just make sure you apply the most recent TCPIP (or UCX) patch for the version you're running.

Volker.

PS: This problem has shown up in ITRC before, but it's hard to search for...

Adrain,

here is the problem description from TCPIP V5.1 ECO 5.

This problem is fixed in TCPIP V5.1 ECO3 (or higher).

ECO AF 11-SEP-2001 Alpha and VAX

Images:

TCPIP$INETACP.EXE V5.1-15AF

Problem:

Incoming telnet sessions getting long string of control characters and no username prompt. Telnet unusable even after shutting down/restarting TCPIP; only reboot clears. TNA0 template device characteristics were being corrupted.

Brilliant, thanks Volker.

They're running 5.1 so I'll get the patch sorted asap.

Cheers :)
