Re: Zillions of untraceable (?) subprocesses.

Do you by any chance use this as a mail server, and every time a mail message kicks in you kick off a scan?

Bob, that doesn't seem to be the case - please see Jan's report from 22 Apr.

Re: Zillions of untraceable (?) subprocesses.

I have seen in a billing software for Telco something similar: spawn of many processes that lasted 1 to 5 cent of a second!!!
in fact it was a bad port from Unix, the subprocess was doing "sleep 0.03" or something similar :-)

1 (Vms) = success

1 (unix) = error

Is this HPOVSANAGENT a program like the one mentioned in http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=726076 ?

Re: Zillions of untraceable (?) subprocesses.

I just wanted to be sure :D
Wasn't that written in Java, or was that something else.
Anyway I guess it's the same problem as gegrad pointed out: likely to be badly ported software?. If all users would complain, would HP have sufficient backing to have this fixed - the PROPER way, that is, including updating version number etc? These people need be taught some dicipline, it seems....

Re: Zillions of untraceable (?) subprocesses.

Yes, it's written in Java, but I still beleive OVSAM is an amazing piece of software (as part of a certification I learned a bit about it's internal structure). Unfortunately, it also means that it is complex as hell.

But you don't need to worry / care - I don't think OpenVMS has any priority and the product has been EOLed anyway.

Re: Zillions of untraceable (?) subprocesses.

Thanks all.

It has been decided that the added value our SAN people will get from this software does not warrant any more effort by VMS.

So, pretty unsatisfactory end of this story.

Proost.

Have one on me.
