Hi,

i have four alpha nodes (ES40,ES45) running in a openvms cluster environment.The VMS cluster served through MEMORYCHANNEL hub. Now the user want to add one more server to existing cluster.The new server is ITANIUM RX2660. This system only support openvms 8.2.

My question is
How to add this node in existing cluster?
what type of interface is needed like memorychannel hub ..?
Is it possible to add a 8.3version in a existing cluster (7.3-2) ..?
ethernet cluter or fiber cluster which is effective ..?

any other doc's available related this question plz give the details.

It is supported for migration purposes. Memory channel is limited to 4 nodes. But you can use ethernet to connect this one with the others.

I'd recommend 8.3 for the RX2660, but the docs say that it isn't warranted for mixed use with 7.3-2; 8.2-1 is warranted though.

The CCMHB-AA memory channel hub can be expanded to support eight systems. However, the CCMAB-BA adapter requires a pci slot with 5v power. I don't think any of the Integrity servers have pci slots with 5v power. And I just looked quickly at an 8.3 Integrity system and I cna't seem to find a SYS$MCDRIVER...

Migrating to a LAVC using dedicated dual gigabit Ethernet NICs and and two dedicated Ethernet switches is your best option. Converting to GigE might not only perform better than memory channel but even cost less than adding more memory channel hardware.

Only 8.3+ is supported on the RX2660.

You'll be using Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) as a cluster communications interconnect here.

Memory Channel (MC) is a hardware dead-end.

Fibre Channel (FC) is available as a storage interconnect.

You're adding a new system disk. Follow the installation instructions for OpenVMS I64. Some of the considerations on how to synchronize files across the cluster (you'll be using your OpenVMS Alpha files), and details of that are in the URL I cited.

One of the wrinkles here is ensuring the TCP/IP Services and other process-level (username) quotas are sufficient for OpenVMS I64. This is something that requires local evaluation of the running environments of the processes. The memory-page-oriented values (pgflquota, the ws* quotas) will likely need to be doubled for OpenVMS I64.

OS parameters would see the usual AUTOGEN with FEEDBACK on the existing Alpha hosts.

The cluster software product description (SPD) has the support matrix, listing the warranty-supported and migration-support configurations. SPDs are here:

This configuration is migration-support, meaning it should work, but if something fails you might get told "upgrade". Details on the matrix and the official HP definitions of the support levels are in the cluster SPD.

Now as for the other way to interpret that "should I upgrade?" question, yes, I would upgrade to the same version across all nodes. Consistent versions makes it easier for system management, and for programmers, and for the software packages you might inquire and install.

Do take the time to read the release notes and the upgrade documentation for OpenVMS, and the details that are included with the migration to OpenVMS I64 documentation.

And you're not going to get anything approaching a complete answer here (and to any of these questions) in a tiny little text input box. No matter how much I or others might type here. There are several full manuals on the topic of upgrades and clustering, and moving to OpenVMS I64. And there's no substitute for reading the manuals. And each configuration is unique.

Mind, I do NOT say you necessarily need to give lots of points. It is fully up to _YOU_ to decide how many. If you consider an answer is not deserving any points, you can also assign 0 ( = zero ) points, and then that answer will no longer be counted as unassigned.
