My server has no tape drive. can backup be taken for openvms 7.3 alpha system on CD-rom? If yes, please explain the procedure.

No, VMS backup can't write to CD-ROM (or even CDR).

Even if it could, unless you had a really small disk, you would have to keep changing CDR media.

If you are short on cash, get a used DLT drive on E-bay. I wouldn't consider anything less than a DLT-7000 for a server.

If it's for ongoing backups, I would also consider buying an used tapedrive.
For a one-shot you may try to backup over DECnet to another VMS node (saveset may reside on other nodes), or backup to a saveset on another disk and copy it to another system (and burn it to DVD...).
