failed to load <sys$ldr>enf$routines.exe (OVMS v8.3)

Hi there,

After I upgrade my ovms v7.3-2 to v8.3 on an
axp1200, the following initialization error occurs during system boot.

I ran the following and found the enf$routines under [sys0.sys$lrd] was revised
after my vms upgrade.

Can anyone tells what's wrong and how to fix it ?

I don't see ENF$ROUTINES.EXE on my system, so
I'd assume that it's part of some optional
(old, 2002) product (which may need to be
re-installed, if it's still supported on VMS
V8.3).

enf$routines is part of a CA application. I'm not sure which one but you need to upgrade that to fix it. It's not part of VMS.

If you don't know what it is, then it may not
matter much if it doesn't work.

I'd probably look at the system start-up
procedures to see what it was doing when it
issued the complaint, and try to clean it
out. You might get some clues if you DUMP
ENF$ROUTINES.EXE.

Mind, I do NOT say you necessarily need to give lots of points. It is fully up to _YOU_ to decide how many. If you consider an answer is not deserving any points, you can also assign 0 ( = zero ) points, and then that answer will no longer be counted as unassigned.
Consider, that every poster took at least the trouble of posting for you!

To easily find your streams with unassigned points, click your own name somewhere.
This will bring up your profile.
Near the bottom of that page, under the caption "My Question(s)" you will find "questions or topics with unassigned points " Clicking that will give all, and only, your questions that still have unassigned postings.
If you have closed some of those streams, you must "Reopen" them to "Submit points". (After which you can "Close" again)

Do not forget to explicitly activate "Submit points", or your effort gets lost again!!

you should be able to pin down WHAT element in the startup generates this error.
And then decide whether you can remove it, or need it. If you need it, you will probably need CA for help, but more likely to sell you an updated version.

The curious thing is the reported status code 00000239. By normal interpretation, that's severity -S- "Success". Looking at the -W- and -E- conditions on either side:

$ exit %x239
$ exit %x238
%SYSTEM-W-UNSAFE, drive unsafe
$ exit %x23a
%SYSTEM-E-UNSAFE, drive unsafe
$

To track down more detail, try booting with

>>> b -fl 20000,

or even
>>> b -fl 10000,

(the latter will generate LOTS of output!)

to determine exactly what is causing the message. It might also be interesting to RENAME the image to .EXE_OLD and see what happens if the file is missing altogether.

The UNIVMS directory is a clue that it's probably a part of CA UniCenter, which I'd guess is deep enough into OpenVMS that it will require a new version to run under V8.3. Maybe talk to CA?

as far as I remember, ENF stands for 'Event Notification Facility' and this image is part of some old Polycenter tool, which is now part of some CA tool (Unicenter TNG or similar).

If you would be trying to use that tool after the upgrade, it would fail. If you need this tool, you should have missed it already ;-)

You could probably use the SYSMAN SYS_LOADABLE REMOVE command, to remove the entry for ENF$ROUTINES.EXE from SYS$UPDATE:VMS$SYSTEM_IMAGES.IDX to prevent the attempt of trying to load this image, if you care about the error message during boot.
