mail counter off by one

Running vms 7.3 on alpha ds25. When I enter mail, it says that I have (for example) 5 new messages, while in actuality I just have 4. Is there a way to reset the counter? I can definitely live with this, but thought someone might know a quick fix.

$ Mail
READ/NEW

Should fix this. ( just remember that this what the solution I used earlier)

From within MAIL a READ/NEW might do the trick.
