mismatch HELP and SYSGEN output

I'd like to report - since I don't have a syupport contract I'm not able (WHY???) to issue this otherwise. And since OpenVMS engeneering looks at this....

Found in VMS 7.3-1 (Alpha) SYSGEN, there is a difference in specified maxima on ERLBUFFERPAGES:

Sys_Parameters Subtopic? erlbufferpages

SYS_PARAMETERS

ERLBUFFERPAGES

ERLBUFFERPAGES specifies the amount of memory to allocate for
each buffer requested by the ERRORLOGBUFFERS parameter.

On VAX systems, ERLBUFFERPAGES has a default value of 2 pages and
a maximum value of 32 pages.

On Alpha systems, ERLBUFFERPAGES has a default value of 4
pagelets and a maximum value of 32 pagelets.

On Alpha systems, ERLBUFFERPAGES is an AUTOGEN-altered parameter.

SHOW ERLBUFFERPAGES gives a max four times this size:

SYSGEN> SHOW ERLBUFFER*
Parameter Name Current Default Min. Max. Unit Dynamic
-------------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ---- -------
ERLBUFFERPAGES 8 8 2 128 Pagelets

As I understood, there are more discrepancies in this area.

Re: mismatch HELP and SYSGEN output

Just wondering if you have all the required patches.

Check out the australia ftp site, it have them colour coded.

http://ftp.support.compaq.com.au/pub/ecoinfo/ecoinfo/a731.htm

Normally, ftp.support.compaq.com.au
then select index by version
then select version (VAX / ALPHA o/s)
now all your patches are colour coded...

Perhaps one of these addresses the issue..

If my answer helped, pass me points....

Re: mismatch HELP and SYSGEN output

All patches - and certainly the VMS ones - were installed when I ran into this. None of them addressed this issue....

Re: mismatch HELP and SYSGEN output

It may be a simple oversight. When the parameter changes were made, the documentation was not updated. Or you may not have access to the latest documentation.

Re: mismatch HELP and SYSGEN output

Hi Marty,

he is quoting from the Online help from within Sysgen which arguably should be the current/correct/matching one to what the program actually does.

Re: mismatch HELP and SYSGEN output

Hi Martin,

He may be accessing the on-line help, but that does guarantee that the on-line help was updated properly when sysgen was/is modified.

DEC was very good at updating the documentation.

HP has a poor track record in this regard. If anyone doubts this, just look at their Openview for Operations product. It was orignially called opc, then ITO, then VPO and now OVO. If you look at the help/error messages, most of them still refer to ITO.

I didn't have much to do with Compaq, so I can't say how well they updated their documentation.

The problem could have been the result of an incomplete upgrade, where the online help was not updated. This could be tested by having other users check their online help.

Re: mismatch HELP and SYSGEN output

Hi Marty,

that is what I did ;-) This is the text displayed by the 7.3-1 on-line help and I am actually pretty confident that there were no obvious problems during the upgrade on my system ;-)

Re: mismatch HELP and SYSGEN output

VMS7.3-1 was installed from scratch so there is no history of older versions on my system.
So HELp is complete.
This is a Compaq matter - since HP didn't have anything to do with this version!

The text came from HELP and SYSGEN on my system (cut & paste from terminal emulator on PC). It's merely something I ran into, no trouble anyway. All works well, I stick to what SYSGEN tells me (it's the larger amount of the two...)
