printing of image files like *.gif in ovms alpha

Hi
We are not able to print image file from alpha open vms v7.3-2 to network printer configured through tcpip.
In same printer if I fire print from windows based PC , I am able to print the same image file. ( done ftp from alpha to pc and print the file to same network printer)

- here I am able to print the postscript file from ovms ( say file with .PS extension)

please suggest how we can do the same.

I dont get any error while print command but it just prints the junk character.

You need a piece of software to transform the image file format, e.g. GIF/JPG..., to a format the printer can understand.
E.g. DCPS can transform REGIS,TEKTRONIX to Postscript to print on PS printers.
E.g. IMAGEMAGICK can convert GIF to PS for printing.
Or use the Mozilla/CSWB webbrowser for converting/Printint to Postscript.

Your windows system is not simply "printing" the picture (i.e. is not sending the picture file directly to the printer), but some application/script (under windows explorer ?) is producing a Postscript (or PCL) file, which then is sent to the printer.
On VMS (same as in Unix systems), there is no automatic/transparent application, You have to use one of the many picture-viewers like XV, image-magick, the Decwindows image viewer (under the application manager of the CDE desktop), or whatever software You prefer to save the image in Postscript or PCL format.

Re: printing of image files like *.gif in ovms alpha

Hi Guys

Thanks for your reply. From where I can find the image-magic software ? Is it a freeware?

- if I open the file in CSWB , do I need to first save the file in PS format and then print or I can have direct print command under CSWB?

Using CSWB (or Mozilla) just load the image so
you can see it, then select the print option and
specify any relevant options.

I think ImageMagic is on one of the recent Freeware
CDs. (Freeware V6, just checked).

Dave.

Hi Dave

Thanks for all your input.
I will try the options and revert.
